    2. HI Denyse......if you get anywhere with your ROSCOE line, I'd be pleased to know if you run across an ADA ANNIE ROSCOE/W b. 1865 Chorlton. Ada married into my STUART line and they lived in Moss Side in 1891 and 1901. Thanks....mary lou In a message dated 7/22/2011 9:25:47 P.M. 3. Hi David   Thanks so much for your help.  I am now beginning to suspect that the reference I found for a William, son of Squire in America is nothing to do with the English Bowkers.  It was just that "Squire Bowker" is such an unusual name, I felt I had to follow it up.  Thanks for the info that you sent, which I hadn't seen before.  Will now check more to see if I can link John Bowker to Squire - many thanks once again.   Joyce   --- On Sat, 23/7/11, David Wightmore <[email protected]> wrote: From: David Wightmore <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [ENG-MAN] Squire Bowker To: [email protected] Date: Saturday, 23 July, 2011, 7:56 Hi Joyce, First off, no relations or family knowledge... Elizabeth BOWKER died at age 40 in 1860  (lancashirebmd.org) I suspect that Squire had a (perhaps, older) brother named John, who married Hannah WOLSTENHOLME in Radcliffe in 1846.  Again using lancashirebmd, with the surnames BOWKER and WOLSTENHOLME, district, Bury between 1840 and 1860, there are a total of 6 children, one of whom is your John James born in 1850.  The others are Elizabeth (1848), Matthew (1850), Thomas (1851), James (1853), and Mary (1856).  The first two are John and Hannah's children (from familysearch using the batch number search) and I suspect the rest are as well (nothing shows after 1850). 1. [ENG-MAN] Squire Bowker
    2. JOYCE SHAW
    3. Hi Everyone   I am new to this list and was wondering if the aboved named is in anyone's tree.  Squire Bowker was born on 13 June 1826 to John Bowker and his wife Elizabeth (maiden name unknown)  Squire founded a cotten factory in Radcliffe.  His wife was Elizabeth Woolstenholme and he had (as far as I can find out) only one child hamed John James Bowker who was born in 1850.  In the 1861 census Squire is listed as a widower, so Elizabeth must have died between 1850 and 1861.  I am wondering if there was another son born to this marriage named William.  I have found evidence of a "William Bowker, the son of Squire Bowker" in America, and was wondering if this could be anything to do with "my" Squire.    I live in Essex so getting to the Manchester Archives is a real problem for me, but if anyone has got transcripts of the Radcliffe registers or is researching this name, I would be very pleased to hear from you.  I was also wondering if anyone knows anything about the factory - whereabouts in Radcliffe it was, if any photos exist etc.  According to the 1881 census there were  20 men, 145 women and 15 girls employed there, so I am guessing it would be a fairly sizable mill.   Thanks to everyone in anticipation   Joyce Shaw

    1. [ENG-MAN] John Briercliffe's death
    2. dianna charles
    3. Hi Everyone I was just wondering has anyone used the Official Non-Conformist, Non Parochial BMD Service. I've been looking for the burial/death of an ancestor John BRIERCLIFFE for a while now. There is a John Briercliffe listed as being buried in 1836 in Lancashire (R94 1024) I can't find out anything else yet about this record as there is a 50 pence fee to search. Has anyone else used this service at all and what else could possibly be included in the record to help with my research. (The family were living in Manchester at this time) John Briercliffe (sometimes spelt Britcliffe) is the father of my convict ancestor Mary Britcliffe who was sent to Tasmania in 1846. John's wife is Hannah he had two other daughters Charlotte who died in 1834 (Manchester) and Elizabeth/Betty/Betsy and one son James. Any help much appreciated kind regards Dianna in cold Sydney

    1. [ENG-MAN] DR. HAROLD TREVOR TAYLOR
    2. Graham Price
    3. Hi everyone, just back after some time away. I have a most probable (by research) 3rd cousin by name of Harold Trevor Taylor, born 1929 Hyde registration district, Greater Manchester, (down from my Price family of Gorton/Hyde) who appears to have married one Jean Loseby in 1951. I note that a Dr. Harold Trevor Taylor (chemistry) (OBE 1989) became principal of Huddersfield Technical College, probably 1960's-1980s and who passed on in 2007. His age is given and he would have also been born in 1929. The coincidences of everything are quite amazing. Is the good doctor my 3rd cousin? If anyone knows anything about where Dr. Taylor was born or have knowledge of any other information concerning him, I would be very pleased to receive same. Best wishes from Melbourne Australia Graham

    1. [ENG-MAN] Henry Craddock criminal activity 1847
    2. Mary
    3. Dear Listers, Does anyone have access to Newspaper reports from 1847? Henry Craddock was supposed to have been sentenced in Oct 1847 , along with a female accomplice for Street robbery at the Manchester Quarter Sessions. This chap, probably a great uncle from Wolverhampton seems to have been a habitual criminal who got about a bit and also had a few aliases! Best wishes, Mary
