    1. [ENG-MAN] Dennis Baines
    2. Patricia Gee
    3. Hello, I am researching the BAINES family who lived in Manchester. I'm having trouble getting back past Dennis Baines, born about 1829 in Manchester. He was a shoemaker and this seems to have been the family trade. I have the family *forward* from Dennis and I have a marriage for Dennis to Mary Carney 1859 on which certificate it cites his father as John. I live in Queensland Australia and would appreciate any advice as to where I might go next. Many thanks, Pat

    2. Irene Marlborough
    3. As Dennis is often an Irish forename and CARNEY is an Irish surname, you should probably be on the look out for Irish forbears. Dennis is a version of Dionysus and you can sometimes find it spelled that way even in Victorian times. 1829 is early for Irish immigration to Manchester but not unusual. As a transcriber of Manchester census records, I can tell you that there will be many different variations on the BAINES surname. Certainly it's hard to distinguish between BAINES and BARNES for example. I'd also check BURN(E)(S).   Is Dennis's place of birth consistent on census returns? Is his age consistent on census, marriage and death records? Are there any siblings that you can trace? Sibs are often worth tracking down throughout their lives as they may end up looking after their elderly parents or other relatives. They may have other places of birth which would give you other avenues of research.   hth, Irene   PS There is a Dennis BURNS in Barton on Irwell in 1851. He's a shoe maker born Ireland but living with the CARNEY family. Looks a likely candidate to me. 1. [ENG-MAN] New to List - Bailey, Cannon, Linata families
    2. valerie Newell
    3. Hello. My name is Valerie Newell. I live in Ontario, Canada. I am researching my husbands side of the family who resided in Manchester. Maria Madeline Cannon b. 1894 in Manchester and died in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Married XX Bailey about 1923 in Manchester area. He died and we don't really know anything about him. Maria's parents were James Cannon b. abt 1858. (Not sure when he died.) The last record I have found was the 1901 Census keeping him in Manchester. He married Maria Madelena Linata 1890 in Manchester. (July, Aug or Sept according to Index) Maria Madelena Linata was born winter 1870 in Manchester. The 1871 Census has her family living in St. Anne, Lancashire. 1881 has her family living in Manchester at 4 Thompson Street. Maria's family includes: Parents Benedetto Linata b. abt 1830 in Italy and Harriet ? b. abt 1848 in Italy and d. Oct 1897 in Manchester District. They had the following children: - Giovanni Linata b. 1856 -Bartolomew Linata b. abt 1860 - Stefano Linata b. abt 1872 & d. 1944 in Manchester - Domonique Emanuel Linata b. abt 1874 in Manchester d. 1933 in Manchester. Was living 13 Rivald Street, Oldham Rd, Manchester at time of death. - Benedeto Albert Linata b. abt July 1882 in Manchester. - Andreas Linata b. abt 1887 in Manchester. Note: Family name on our side was spelled Linata. Many records show name as Lanata but that is how our line used it. James Cannon's parents were John Cannon b. 1826 In Ireland and Margaret ? b. abt 1831 in Ireland. James Cannon was a Clothes Vendor. So far I have found three children for them. James (listed above with Maria Linata), Mary b. abt 1855 in Manchester and Elizabeth b. abt 1859 in Manchester. Hopefully I have helped someone out or connected with someone. Sadly alot of information has been lost with loved ones long gone. Happy Hunting. Val Newell Please post a message to the list introducing yourself. Give us a general idea of where you live, let us know where your interests lie, which surnames you're researching, and the accompanying dates and places in Manchester. The message should be sent to
