    1. [UK Genealogy] ASTILL, MILLS, BARRETT Families
    2. Rhonda Merritt
    3. Hi Everyone, My great-grandmother, Lily Blanche Hope nee Astill, born 3rd of September 1884 at 18 (or 19?) Victoria Street Swindon, immigrated to Australia in the early 1900’s. After her death in 1949, my grandmother corresponded with her aunt, Mrs Mellor, until the aunt died in 1955. The family seemed to lose contact after that, and after my grandmother, Lily Blanche Astill Goodhew nee Hope, passed away in 1971 all possible knowledge of the family has been lost. I would love to find out more about the family and re-establish contact with anyone with connections with them. Lily Astill’s grandfather was Robert Astill of the Printing Works, Hartfordstreet, Coventry. Her grandmother was Ann Astill nee Wootton. Her father was also named Robert Astill, and was baptised at St Michael, Coventry on 15 April 1833, moved to Swindon as young man and became foreman to Mr W. Dore’s printing works in Victoria Street, later succeeding the business, carrying it on, and eventually transferring it to his sons. Her mother, Margaret Delphi Considine Astill nee Hall, second daughter of William Hall of Pendennis Castle, Cornwall, is said to have been born at or near the castle itself. Margaret died in 1899, and Robert subsequently married a second time to a Miss Maynard of Putney. Robert Astill died on June 15, 1915 at Zeals and was buried in Swindon beside Margaret. Robert had a brother, Charles Frederick Astill, baptised 16 March 1836 at St Michael, Coventry. My great grandmother had 14 other siblings. They are listed below in no particular order, along with the limited information we have on them: Robert Astill Known as Bob Possibly had daughter named Violet, who possibly became a Mrs Barrett, with a son Eric Barrett Died 21/2/47 Lothair Astill Alive as at 1915 Charles (Charlie) Astill Born 1872 Still alive as at 1953 Ella Alicia Ward Astill Possibly resided with brother Quigley Still alive as at 1955 Quigley Wallace Astill Born 1874 Possibly resided with sister Ella Still alive as at 1955 Mary Delphi Considine Astill Still unmarried at time of death in 1954 Elsie Astill Alive as at 1915 Amy Astill Died prior to 1949 Married name Mills Children: Edward Ewart (Known as Ted. The eldest) and Arthur (2nd son), who were partners in a furniture business in Swindon. Wilfred – recalled as living in Swindon Leslie – lived in Sheffield Nellie Astill Alive as at 1915 Died prior to 1953 Arthur Astill Annie Katherine Wootton Hall Astill A nurse Still alive as at 1955 Margaret Florence Marionne Astill Born December 1868 Known as Florrie or Flo Married to the Rev. Frederick William Mellor Died 1955 Polly Astill Possibly resided with the Mellors Still alive as at 1953 1 other sibling Name unknown Hoping that someone may be able to help me. 2. Brian
    3. Would like to find information on my gg uncle who left England for (probably) South Africa or Rhodesia about 1880. Robert William SURRY was born in Wrentham, SFK in 1841. The SURRY family had lived in the Hastings-Bexhill-Icklesham area from about 1844 to at least 1903. The family had a photo of Robert - taken about age 45, with two native boys. My grandfather, who emigrated to Western Canada about 1909, had a book (now long lost but which he loved to display) in which the name of his uncle Robert William SURRY was mentioned (as having done something of some significance). Robert W. SURRY was supposed to have been a bit of a "black sheep" in the family. Help??

    3. Hello, If you haven't already done so, I suggest you subscribe to the Rootsweb list for Norfolk. It's a very busy list, so if you don't won't hundreds of separate e-mails coming in every day, it would probably be best to subscribe in digest mode. To do this, send an e-mail to NORFOLK-D-request@rootsweb.com with the single word subscribe in the subject line, and the same word in the message. Fortunately, Sharrington is a small village, so someone on the Norfolk list will probably be able to tell you what parish registers exist. (The time you are interested in is too early for civil registration and censuses, of course). You could also try the Genuki website (it stands for "Genealogy UK and Ireland", or something like that). Follow the instructions to get to the page for Norfolk, and you may find some help there. The url is http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/ Another idea would be to submit the surname BURLINGHAM to the Norfolk surnames list, at: http://freespace.virgin.net/isabel.easter/Norfolk/Surnames.htm Well, I hope that is of some help to you. Regards, and best wishes in your research. 1. [UK Genealogy] GREENWOOD, George
    2. Audrey & Ray Staines
    3. > George Greenwood was born March 24 1881, one of two twin boys. His brother, Henry > Thomas, was my maternal grandfather. These births were registered in "St. Lukes > Parish, in the Finsbury district of London". I understand that "Finsbury" is now > part of "Islington" if that is pertinent. I have a photograph of the two brothers in army uniform. My grandfather became M.I.A. on the Somme Sept. 15 1916 and is in the Commonwealth War Graves records. George is not in those records. My grandfather was serving with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers at his death. What regiment George was assigned to is not known. George is said to have married, all that is known of his wife is a name "Alice". My mother is one of 7 children, George and Alice may have had a similar sized family. George and Alice have been lost for years: any one with any information on them and/or their family? Suggestions on leads to follow are also welcome. Ray Staines, Ingersoll, ON, Canada

    1. Re: [UK Genealogy] DAVIS - COLLINS
    2. David Lamb
    3. Hello, Sorry to be pessimistic, but with common surnames like DAVIS and COLLINS, (especially DAVIS in Wales), and just knowing that it was somewhere in Wales or England, I don't know where anyone would start looking, as the dates you mention mean that it was before civil registration of births, marriages and deaths (this started in 1837), and before national censuses (these began in 1801, but until 1841, they were nothing more than a head-count). The records one would normally turn to for the period prior to civil registration are the parish registers, which record christenings, marriages and burials, but with no idea which county, let alone which town or parish, it would be an impossible task. As far as I know, your only chance is that maybe Jonathan COLLINS had other children, and just maybe, someone else may have seen your message who is descended from one of them. Incidentally, was his son actually named "Jonathan Collins DAVIS"? I only ask because I've noticed that American researchers often seem to put the mother's maiden name between a child's first name and surname, regardless of whether the child was actually known by that name. Here, this is only done if the child actually took the mother's maiden name as a second Christian name. (I must stress that I'm not criticising, but if you were not aware of the difference, it could lead to confusion). Sorry to be of so little help - maybe somebody else on the list has a more positive suggestion. 1. [UK Genealogy] Introductions
    2. Linda Edwards
    3. Hello everyone, I have recently joined this list and if I may have a moment of your time, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Linda Edwards and since 1989 I have been helping my husband, Stephen, to locate information on his deceased parents, Sidney EDWARDS [who went by the name of Tony LAUGHTON] and Alma Victoria EDWARDS [nee COX, but went by the given name of Vicky]. It's a bit of a long winded story as to why he didn't know his parents, but the "shortened" version of this that Vicky passed away when my Stephen was only 4 years of age and because of this, Tony never spoke of her and her family, and, we surmised because of his own circumstances growing up, Tony did not like to speak much of his own life. Consequently, Stephen knew nothing about his family. [By the time Stephen and I met, Tony had been passed away for 2 years.] What information we have been able to gather has been only through Governmental records. It has been my wish from day, one that one day Stephen will be able to make contact with a cousin or a friend/neighbour who remembered his parents. It seems that with each new document obtained, 100 new questions arise. Listed below are the names and places that I have been able to find to find documentation on. For Vicky's parents, I do have a series of addresses that they lived at over the years. If any of this sounds familiar, I would like to hear from you. Also, any advice on how I may be able to make contact with family/friends will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time in reading this and for your consideration. Kindest Regards, Linda Edwards {genmum@juno.com} Located in: Las Vegas, Nevada Researching: Vicky's Family: Arthur COX and Annie PERKINS of Leeds, WRY Tony's Family: Robert LAUGHTON, of Scarborough, NRY Mary Ellen EDWARDS [nee GOODHEAD] of Castleford, WRY. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO!
