    1. [UK Genealogy] GREENWOOD, George.
    2. Audrey & Ray Staines
    3. May I re-post my lost connection? George GREENWOOD was born March 24 1881, the elder twin brother of my maternal grandfather. (Henry Thomas Greenwood). Nothing is known about George subsequent to a photograph of the two brothers in Army uniform (circa 1914-16). Grandfather was reported "MIA" on the Somme, and is in the War Graves Comm. data base. Uncle George is not in that database and, presumably, survived until 1918. The two boys were shown as living in "Finsbury" on their birth certificates. At the time of his enlistment Grandpa lived on Westmoreland Street in either Shoreditch or Hoxton, depending on who one defines the area. The street did not survive the blitz of WW2, and was subsequently redeveloped in a truncated shape, and renamed. Would very much like to hear from descendants of George Greenwood, if they are out there. Ray Staines, Ontario Canada.

    2. David Braithwaite
    3. I am at a brick wall. James Braithwaite was in Toronto Ontario Canada in February 1832. He was born in England in 1801. I can't find from where in England he came nor how. He is related in some way to Elizabeth Braithwaite at whose wedding he was a witness, Major Braithwaite, Frances Braithwaite and maybe William and William Jr. Braithwaite - all in the Toronto area in the 1830s. I need suggestions on where to go next. By coincidence I am going to London 3-12 June and want to do some research there - but where? All suggestions will be appreciated. 3. Hello everyone, I'm new to the list. Can anyone help or advise me please? I'm searching for a JAMES GREENSLADE CAMPION who emigrated to Newfoundland from Devon, England. His wife was called Selina Eliza (no surname but possibly Prouse) and she was from Ilsington, Devon. I have not been able to find any dates of birth or marriage. Their first child was born in St John's, Newfoundland in 1866. As yet I am unable to find them on any passenger list. An elderly friend in the USA is desperate to find his family's English origins and has been searching for many years. Dee

    3. I am interested in how I can find information of a William Henry Miles who immigrated to Australia from England. His place of origin was Bristol. He as born c1861 and was the child of Reuben Miles and Elizabeth Glover. He may have had a brother called Rupert and a sister called Elizabeth (there were 2 maybe 3 sisters in all). He left England on the SS Orient in 1879. He was married three times. His first wife was Luisa Reynolds, then Mary Ryan and Eva Tizzard. He may have married another lady prior to leaving England who may have died enroute. Any help would be appreciated - even if it is only a direction in which to start looking. Thanks Kim P.S. 2. Karen Atkin
    3. Hi all I am looking to find my grandfather on my maternal side. I know he is dead and that he died after my mother was born in 1940. These are the facts. The legends that have sprung up around him are very misleading. My mother and her brother were illegitimate, the result of a liason between Elsie Barrett and Robert(Rupert)Large, I have conflicting details about where he was born, I was always led to belive he was born in Oban in Scotland, but have recently been told he was the son of a family from Liverpool. This family may or may not have been schoolteachers I was always led to believe he drowned at sea but have been told he died of an asthma attack. There are so many conflicting stories. So if any body out there has a Robert/Rupert Large that disappeared without trace pleases contact me Katt

They had known children, have seen listed that they had 11, John (Herbert) in 1868 born Ceylon, Julia born 1870 in Barielly India, Clara born 1876 in Aden, all other children were born in England they are as follows George born in 1880, Charles, Richard, and Robert. 1. Re: [UK Genealogy] Re: All email queries to webrings are attachments!
    2. David Lamb
    3. Hello, Are Vicki's "webrings" the same thing as mailing-lists(like this one, ENG-LOST-CONNECTIONS) ? If they're not then please ignore the rest of this message. If they are, then I don't think she can be correct. The virus concerned spreads itself by seeking out unread messages on someone's computer. If it finds one, it somehow uses it to access the person's address book, then sends a message to everyone in the address book. These messages copy the subject and original message of the unread message (or maybe some other message in a thread - I'm not sure). Before it come words like "David Lamb wrote: ", and after it, "Take a look at the attachment" with nothing to tell you what the attachment is. A message like this cannot appear directly on a Rootsweb mailing list, which, if a message is sent with an attachment, strips it first. I suppose that if like me you subscribe to Rootsweb lists in digest mode, all the messages appear as what look like attachments under a blank message pane, but they are nothing like the attachments which contain the virus. I hope someone with more technical knowledge will correct me if I am wrong on this, but as I understand it, we don't need to unsubscribe from the lists. What we should do is to make sure we read or delete messages as soon as we get them, or at least before we connect to the net again, so the virus won't be able to find any unread message to latch on to. Also, if we receive an attachment which we are not totally sure about, then we should delete it immediately. Of course we should have good up-to-date anti virus protection, but from what I've read, even some of the latest programs are not catching this one. Regards. Re virus warnings; Its no use telling people not to open any attachments unless they know not to open any subject headings on their lists; which of course are attachments in themselves; and could well be bugged without them knowing. The gene webs are being deliberately targeted. It is best to stay off the lists for a few days. Just delete them and hope the answers come up again later. Better than losing all your databases. 1. Re: [UK Genealogy] RC Church Records
    2. Diane Ellerton
    3. Hello Jack, There are actually some RC records on the IGI, although they may be limited. If you go to the following website, there is a search engine for Batch Numbers: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Trail/8333/iginum.html The following are examples for a few entries for Yorkshire RC churches: "Aberford M007341 - M007342 C007341 - C007342 (Roman Catholic) C075711 Aiskew (Roman Catholic) C079581" Those are from the first page of the Yorkshire batch numbers which I copied out, and there is also an Independent Church batch listed there. You will also find many Methodist entries, some Baptist, and a few Quaker. If there is no batch number for the area/parish that interests you, it is probably because that particular RC parish did not give the LDS permission to film. We have found that getting in touch with the present church, if it still exists, can get some replies. Admittedly, we are a lot closer to our areas of interest, but if you write, you will probably at least be able to find out whether your relatives are actually on the church records, and if it would merit a visit by yourself or a researcher. We were permitted access to the records of SS Mary and Joseph in Hedon by appointment, and a kind lady who is the custodian of the Burton Constable church records actually did look-ups for us. You can usually find the name of the relevant RC church by going to the GENUKI pages which deal with that town/parish. You can then address an enquiry to "The Parish Priest, XX Church, etc. etc." If they do not retain old copies of their parish registers, they can at least tell you where they are held. Hope this helps. 3. grandfather Common or Comyn Shiel left Ireland soon after my father, Michael Shiel, was born near Swinford Co.Mayo 1899. My grandmother died in 1900. According to recently found Irish cousins he went to" England' and remarried. Lancashire seems a logical starting point. Are there descendants of Comyn? Male given names are Michael, Patrick and James. Female include Margaret, Anne, Catherine, Mary. Other than those who may be in England, the rest of us are in the US and Ireland. Any leads would be appreciated and to reciprocate I could share some 3000 entries from Swinford (Meelick/Kilconduff) parish, principally Shiel and Gallagher (my gm's name) and related families.
