It would be great if the GRO implemented a system similar to Scotland but in order to do that I few things need to be done. Legislation would need to be changed to allow it. Whilst this would be straightforward it is a matter of priority as to when it would happen. Registers would need to be scanned, my understanding is that the Births up to 1934 & Deaths up to 1957 have been done by the failed D.O.V.E. project, at a cost of 8.7 million pounds, but that the marriages haven't been scanned yet. There would need to be a searchable online index created (some 300 million records) with links to the digitised registers. I think that it would cost several million pounds to implement the system and there is also the job losses that the government would probably want to consider. These could amount to several dozen or more.
