If anybody has the above Alexander Allan Foote of Kirkdale in the in their family tree, they may be interested to know that he that he was a Soviet agent. A brief "bio" of him can be found in the National Archives copy of the MI5 file KV3 / 350 which deals with members (A-L) on the pre-war and wartime Red Army intelligence spy network in Western Europe known as the "Red Orchestra" (Rote Kapelle in German) about which there are a number of books. Foote is also recorded in "The Rote Kapelle", an American book based on the CIA files regarding the case. I came across Foote because I'm researching my step-father's first wife, who had a very minor walk-on role as an "extra" in the case and was arrested in Paris in 1943 by the Gestapo. She was so embarrassed by her good treatment by the Gestapo that she lied to MI5 after the war, and again in 1982 when she wrote her own book after finding herself named in Gilles Perrault's authoritative account of "The Red Orchestra".
