Any Lister who may be able to help please? Using "Ancestry" I have located a Catholic confirmation in Liverpool on 27 May 1919 for Alan McWILLIAM The Parish is shown as Sacred Heart. His nomine patrinorum (which I understand to be his Godparent) is transcribed as Joannis BAKER. His nomina imposita in confirmatione (which I understand to be a name imposed upon him at the confirmation) is shown as Paulus. This is the nearest match I have ever found, in many years of searching, to my Father named as Alan Paul McWILLIAM b. abt 1910. d. 1945. So the questions I need help with are: 1.. Where or what is Sacred Heart? 2.. Who would Joannis (sic) Baker be? 3.. How can I further this research with the Catholic Church? I have very little documentary evidence of my Father's existence other than his Marriage Certificate to my Mother in 1939, and his Death Certificate from 1945. I have visited his place of death in Withnell Pulmonary Hospital, and have found his unmarked grave in Thornton Garden of Rest. There is some limited anecdotal evidence, but I have drawn a blank since the death of my Mother in 1997. Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated from anyone on the list, and I thank everyone in advance. David
Hi David, There is a match for an Alan McWilliam born bet 1909 - 1911 in the Scottish census. Sadly, I have no credits left to view this and see if anything would help further, but it might be something to bear in mind. http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/: You searched for "alan" "mcwilliam" 1909 - 1911 Census 1911.Learn more. 1 match Statutory Register Births 1909 - 1911.Learn more. No exact matches I notice that Joannis Baker is also shown as a godparent/sponsor to Phillipus Geraldus Simmons, does that name have any connection to the family? Given that the confirmation is carried out some 10 years after the birth of it's possible that the sponsor was supplied by the church itself, and that the child could have been orphaned or maybe even abandoned by the parents, but that is purely guesswork on my part :o) Hope the Scottish information is worthwhile. Hi David, Googling brings up a Sacred Heart RC church at 2 Hall Lane, Kensington, Liverpool L7 Answer to number 2. Joannis Baker is John Baker. I notice he was also godfather to the following child Philip Simmonds. Could they have been orphans or something? At that time (don't know about now) you were given an additional name at a Catholic Confirmation. He was given the name Paul. (My father was given Francis, which he never used as an adult). Presumably you have looked at the RC baptisms online at Ancestry? Have you found a McWilliam baptism which links with the father's name shown on his marriage certificate to your mother? Hi David, I can't answer your questions but you don't give details of his birth so I presume you don't know it. You don't give his father's name from the marriage certificate, that and father's occupation might be useful. Also does it give place of birth on the death certificate. Of course that info is only as good as the supplier of the info knows. I have found a birth in Dublin, Ireland in Aug 1907, parents John and Clare. But that says Presbyterian. Is that a possibility? Also there is an Allen McWilliam b c 1910 on the New York passenger lists on 3 occasions in 1926. He is a crew member, employed as a pantry assistant. Also an Alan McWilliam who is a merchant but his address appears to be London so I have not looked closely at him. Hope this helps Christine -----Original Message----- From: David McWilliam Sent: Tuesday, August 14, 2012 10:11 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [ENG-LIV] Catholic Confirmation - Alan McWILLIAM Any Lister who may be able to help please?
