Hi Everyone I'm wondering if someone might have any ideas on a little problem I have come across. My grandfather, John William PRESCOTT was born in Edge Lane, West Derby, June 1877. He left Liverpool about 1904-1906, supposedly to New York and was never seen by family again. I have found him as a Fireman on a ship returning to Southampton fron Singapore in 1909. I have further found his arrival at Sydney, NSW in 1916, and his army record when he joined the Australian Army at Townsville in 1917. The is on 3 or 4 Electoral rolls in Queensland and died at Rockhampton in 1936. Now, recently I have found another record that I think might be him, although the age is a bit off. There is a J. W. Prescott arriving at New Orleans on the S.S. Castano on 26 Oct 1904. He is a deserting seaman, 25 years old, British, English race. He is the only person listed on the sheet and a few lines down is written "All information obtainable". There is also a notation "Carded" which is encircled. I have googled Castano without luck but did find a Castanos. I'm wondering if anyone has run into one of these deserting seamen manifests before and has any idea how I might proceed. I have looked for his departure from England without luck, whether before 1904, before 1909 when he returned or after 1909 when he obviously left before showing up in Australia. Thanks for any ideas.
