"An historic connection between one of the world’s biggest businesses and the Merseyside family that founded it has come to an end. "After 129 years, consumer goods giant Unilever, which began life at Port Sunlight on the Wirral, has bought out the shares and rights of its founding Leverhulme family for hundreds of millions of pounds. "The owner of brands such as Persil and Flora has paid £715m to buy out the shares and other rights owned by family trusts created at the time of the death of company founder William Hesketh Lever. "Later known as the first Viscount Leverhulme, William Hesketh Lever died in 1925. About 30 of his descendants will share the payout, equivalent to an average of just under £24m."
