Caroline, I also have a relative who was a publican in Liverpool at around the same time and so I can tell you that Liverpool Record Office have in their possession the licensing registers which will tell you the exact dates of each licensee and also of any problems (such as being fined for allowing dominoes to be played - tut, tut!). I realise you are on the other side of the world, and I very rarely get to Liverpool Record Office these days (once in the past ten years, I think!) but I believe they will do research on your behalf for a fee.
