    3. Hi all. Can someone please help me with a problem I have. I am looking for any ideas on how to find more information on my great grandmother's brother, John PRESCOTT, who was born in Downholland 18 Jan 1864. Both of his parents died before he was 3 and the 1871 Census finds him in the Wigan Road Union Workhouse at Ormskirk. In 1881, he is an apprentice bootmaker under Edward Mayson in Burscough. He enlisted in the army, Liverpool Regiment, 18 Jan 1884 (his 20th birthday). He transferred to 1st Class Army Reserve on 17 Jan 1891 on completion of his service. In 1891, he is boarding with his sister, Mary CALLAND in Albert Road Widnes. I have his attestation papers dated 12 June 1900 which indicate he signed up to serve in the Liverpool Regiment for a period of no less than 4 years, until reaching the age of 41, or 21 years total service. It states that he had previously served in the regiment. His address at that time is given as 20 Peelhouse Lane Widnes, which was the home of his brother James PRESCOTT. He served in South Africa in 1901 and 1902. He was discharged on completion of the terms of his enlistment on 18 Jan 1905. His intended residence is given as 30 Peel House Lane, Widnes (home of his brother James) My problem is that I have no record of him after that time. I can not find him on the 1911 Census. His brother James died in 1910. James' daughters are still living at 30 Peel House Lane, but John is not with them. I have looked at the civil registration death indexes and have found several deaths of John Prescott's born about 1864. However, I hesitate to start buying certificates blindly as this could be expensive as well as time consuming. Plus, he may have emigrated at some point. Does anyone know whether the Army, or the Legion, keeps records of the deaths of former soldiers? If they do, that would seem to be a way to possibly track him down. If I can determine when he died I can then order the correct certificate for more details. Thank you for any ideas that you might have. Vern in Ontario, Canada
