Hi John, I looked for the L.A.V. nearly twenty years ago now; my great grandfather was a member about 1862 when he was an 18-year-old. I did find a small book about them - as I recall it, Artillery Volunteers were first raised during the Napoleonic Wars as militia forces. There were thought to be virtually no surviving records. Great grandfather emigrated to South America in Nov 1862 and never returned. One day I will finish an article about him for the Liverpool fhs! BTW, does anyone know anything about his younger sister, Hannah Margaret SLOANE (1847-1922) who married Alec Goodall at Walton-on-the-Hill in 1870? You can pick up quite a lot by going through the newspaper archives. Earliest that I can see is Manchester Mercury - Tuesday 26 June 1798 Thomas Dodson and John Branker made 2nd Lieutenants There are also the Royal Liverpool Volunteers and the Liverpool Independent Volunteers. Next match picked up by the search is Durham County Advertiser - Friday 25 November 1859 Image C THE BRITISH LIBRARY BOARD. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. The swearing in of the Liverpool Artillery Volunteers at St George's Hall, already 700 members. Commanded by Major James Bourne. Louth and North Lincolnshire Advertiser - Saturday 04 February 1860 Image C THE BRITISH LIBRARY BOARD. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Reports that the Artillery Volunteer Polka had been dedicated to the commander of the LAV! Lancashire Evening Post - Saturday 13 January 1900 Image C THE BRITISH LIBRARY BOARD. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Says they could be mobilised at any moment but their guns were obsolete Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser - Friday 05 June 1903 Image C THE BRITISH LIBRARY BOARD. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Camp at Morecambe The only references after that are in obituaries etc of people who had served in the LAV. You could try the London Gazette, there will be promotions and could be a notice of disbandment.
