Bill thanks for the info on the above families. This branch of the Langton family don't appear to be connected with mine, although I have a feeling that the Langton's who operated as Master Porters on each of the 3 Liverpool Docks in the late 18th century couldn't have without the influence of the of the rich Merchant Families like the Langton and Earles.I have also found a Peggy Langton daughter of Edmond Langton[Master Porter] marrying a Francis Bayley. The Bayley Family were not without influence in Liverpool at this time.It seems to me a Cartel was in place at the Docks.I would love to be able to find out if any in depth study has been done of the operation of the docks at this time. Margaret[Wigan]
Margaret, I have no idea whether or not there are accessible studies on Liverpool dock workers and companies. But I'd guess there have to be records of the old Mersey Docks and Harbour Board somewhere. The Maritime Museum? As I said in an earlier post I am so long gone from the Merseyside shipping scene I can no longer recall if there was, or was not, an association of stevedores and master porterage companies. Not telling Grannie how to suck eggs so apologies if you already know that stevedores load and discharge ships while master porters stow etc. the cargo from under the hook to the warehouse.
