I have come across a household of nine people in Cherry Lane, Walton-on-the Hill, in the 1851 Census consisting of a woman head of household aged 54, her sister aged 68, a niece aged 35, a lodger aged 14, and six 'nurse children'. Can a list-member explain this domestic arrangement please? John
John, hi, its simple enough, the six children are either children of the family, who unfortunaely dont have the human milk to feed the children so they get someone in who can breast feed the children, usually a neighbour or another member of the family, or maybe its someone in the family who has enough milk in her breasts to feed neighbours children at a cost, it was a common enough in those dayss when money was as short as sit was, no family allowances in thos days. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Lloyd" <j_m_c.lloyd@virgin.net> To: <eng-liverpool@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 14, 2009 3:17 PM Subject: [ENG-LIV] Nurse Children >I have come across a household of nine people in Cherry Lane, > Walton-on-the Hill, in the 1851 Census consisting of a woman head of > household aged 54, her sister aged 68, a niece aged 35, a lodger aged > 14, and six 'nurse children'. > > Can a list-member explain this domestic arrangement please? > > John > ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ > > Admin Message - List guidelines: > http://freespace.virgin.net/genealogical.collections/AdminMessage.htm > > The list admin can be contacted at > Eng-Liverpool-admin@rootsweb.com > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > ENG-LIVERPOOL-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No virus found in this incoming message.
