    3. Virginia, Walton on the Hill is/was a geographical quite large parish. "A Genealogical Gazetteer of England" (1995, Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore) which is based upon the situation in 183, has this: Walton on the Hill: parish, 1586 (ie start of records), Lancashire, comprising chapelries Everton, Formby, Kirkby, West Derby; townships Bootle with Linacre, Fazakerly, Kirkdale, Simonswood, Walton on the Hill. Pop. 22,575, archdeaconry and diocese Chester; 3 miles ne (of) Liverpool" Chapelries were able to conduct baptisms and burials but not marriages, which had to be performed at the parish level. Later some of these chapelries within the parish would have been elevated to the status parishes in their own right. Hope this helps, David Armstrong Maylands, Western Australia ----- Original Message ----- From: Virginia HILLS To: eng-liverpool@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, September 15, 2009 9:52 AM Subject: [ENG-LIV] ST James Church - Toxteth or Walton on the Hill Hi List I was wondering if someone could help me out. My ancestors William Robinson JACKSON and Maria YOUNG married Apr 1844 at the Church of St James, Parish of Walton on the Hill, Lancaster, Registration District West Derby. They were both originally from Cumberland. THis information is taken from their marriage certificate of which I have a copy. I have been trying to find records of their children's births or baptisms - but am a little confused as to where the St James Church is? GENUKI does not have a St James in the parish of Walton on the Hill and Lancashire on Line states that St James did not have a parish assigned to it until 1844 - so am I looking at the right church?? I would welcome any information kind regards Virginia Mt Isa Qld, Australia
