Hi List, What do you do when you discover that an ancestor has been adopted? Do you still research the name or try to find the birth parents and research that family? Would love to hear your opinions on this. Carolyn

Carolyn, As an adoptee myself I've done both lines, but it would depend on your interest/desires. If adopted as an infant then maybe you stick with the adoptive family, otherwise maybe you'd be interested in both or at least finding the reason for giving the child up for adoption from probate or other records if that might have been stated back then. I think I would research the name as well because you may find a link between the families particularly if it was an adoption before 1950. But for family trees I think only the birth parents line is really valid.
