A journeyman is a timed served tradesman who was entitled to a daily wage (fr Journee). It does not refer in any way to the worker being itinerant. Whilst people have always travelled for work this wasn't easy until quite recently because the authorities did not like unemployed people arriving in their parishes. And if you think about it most places already had plenty of joiners of their own. But the large centres of expansion did suck in workers of all grades from the surrounding counties and beyond. There are actually demographic maps of this process. And of course you can see it in the census. 1841 falls in the period known as the Hungry Forties. If the family were economically distressed at that time it would make sense to up and move to the biggest centre they could think of. Mere by the way is about 25 miles from Bath, and in those days that was a reasonable day's walk for a man in his prime. 50 miles was not unheard of.
