With all the interest of late regarding Home Children and evacuationat the start of the last war ,I was wondering if there where still any Elm Lodge boys still with us ,Elm Lodge was one of the many Homes run by the Waifs and Strays Society ,it was in Waterloo I can,t recall the name of the road but is quite near the Mersey ,where one memory was seeing the Mauratania leaving Cammel Lairds over the river on its Maiden voyage . We where all evacuated well before the outbreak of the war (the home would have been a vunerable spot not far from the Gladstone Docks)North Wales was the first destination Glyn Creiog on the moors we where lodged in a Palatial shooting box owned we think by Sir Alfred McAlpine ,we helped as beaters when a shoot was in place a another memory was a farm cart piled high with Pheasant and other game ,they where genorous with the birds and I can still recall the distinct smell of roast Pheasant ,one of the shooting guests I recall was General Ironsides who was shortly to be in France with the B.E.F. The location in Glyn Ceriog proved unsuitable (very cold)and we where moved to St Giles Home Wrexham ,we remember war being declared whilst we had been in Wrexham for a month or two ,so for us at least we could seem that war preparations wher in hand . To confirm this there was a World War ! tank in front of a nearby park this was removed for scrap prior to us leaving Elm Lodge . I remember some names of long ago pals Joseph Jukes Tony Padden and ? Dunn to name a few . So if any body has memories let us know . John Maddocks New Zealand
