Hello Christine, The only thing I have is the marriage certificate, indicating both parties were of age, and both their fathers were gardeners. I know Mary's wasn't (labourer), so maybe that wasn't William's or father James' occupation either. Mary Brown was born 1845, so likely William Gunning was born around the same time. I'm inclined to think the Gunning name could be Irish. Since I can't find him in the 1871 nor 1881 censuses I have little to go on. Actually, though, I'm more interested in what happened to him after 1877 . . . doubt if he was "out of favour" as his step-daughter kept his photograph, a copy of which is in my possession.
