    3. Hello, I'm curious whether "sea captains" and "master mariners" are 2 different titles. My gr-gr-grandfather, Evan CORKILL, in Liverpool from 1860's to 1900, but from Isle of Man, was a "master mariner." Would he have also been a "sea captain?" 3. Hi Betty, A gt gt Grandad of mine put his father as a master mariner. I eventually tracked said gt gt Grandad to the Thames area and his family were bargemen. Apparently, being in charge of a barge counted, so no sea, but possibly captain. There's loads of info on this at the National archive. After a certain date, all captains had to be registered. See http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=131&j=1 Regards Diane > From: bbffrrpp@comcast.net > To: eng-liverpool@rootsweb.com > Date: Tue, 22 Dec 2009 05:05:23 -0500 > Subject: Re: [ENG-LIV] sea captains > > Hello, > > I'm curious whether "sea captains" and "master mariners" are 2 different > titles. 3. Hello Betty, A Master Mariner was a qualification obtained by study it did not automatically convey a captaincy, indeed many Master Mariners, during the inter-war years, worked as junior officers or even able seamen just to keep working. The title Sea Captain is, of itself, meaningless but it is unlikely that Captaincy of an ocean going merchantman would have been attained without a Master's ticket.
