Forwarded with the author's kind permission. -------- Original Message -------- Message from John Marsden, Lancashire Hi There has been a large, and I hope welcome, advance at www.lancashirebmd.org.uk Up to now, if you wanted to order a certificate for an event found in the LancashireBMD indexes, it was necessary to print out and mail an order form. I am pleased to be able to announce that it is now possible to order SOME certificates online. Lancashire County Council some time ago developed a centre to hold all completed registers and to supply copy certificates for events originally registered in the Accrington, Burnley, Chorley, Clitheroe, Fleetwood, Lancaster, Lytham, Ormskirk, Pendle, Preston and Rawtenstall Registration Districts. Many of these registers are indexed on LancashireBMD. Where you locate an index entry relating to one of these former Registration Districts, you now have the option to order a certificate online. You will see that this is possible as a check box will appear next to the index entry where it appears on the summary screen (which is accessed when you click on the reference in the search results). Simply check this box and then scroll to the bottom of the summary screen and click the button labeled "Start Online Order Process". This will connect you to the Lancashire CC online payments service where you will find instructions to guide you through the rest of the process. Please note that online payment is NOT available yet for certificates from any other Registration District which is indexed on LancashireBMD though a couple of other councils are looking into this option. Lynne, thats a real improvement but there is one thing which causes concern to a lot of people. "COMMON NAMES." The LANCS BMD site gives the names of two persons in a marriage entry, and nothing else apart from where the marriage took place, date and ref no, for ordering certificates. But the same problem persists. eg. ROBERT KELLY marriage between 1928 and 1935, lots of them, BUT which one is the ROBERT KELLY that someone is looking for. No fathers name, no mothers name, no fathers occupation, you can spend a fortune trying to find the right one, and most of family history enthusiasts I believe are in the older group and existing on pensions which dont stretch to ordering willy nilly certificates at £7 a time. Is there no way that the records, the future ones which havent yet been added to the SITE that can include the fathers and or mothers name, or fathers occupation. Not only would this cut down on wrong certs being sent out but also a more efficient and cost saving exercise in having the certificate asked for being sent in the first instance. Its an old problem I know from experience. Margaret Jones for example has cost me a small fortune in certificates and ive still not found her. likewise Margaret Griffiths.
