Hi all Sorry to be jumping in on Coat Tails here - but I have a fellow (William Robinson JACKSON b c1817, Cumberland d 1859 Brownes Diggings, Victoria, Aust) who was listed on his 1844 Marriage Registration (St James, Toxteth Park) as a "Mariner" but then in 1853 on the Ships Manifest to Victoria, Australia - he lists himself as a "Mariner" and in 1878 when one of his daughters gets married he is listed as "Sailor" - does this mean he was with the Navy or was he a (dare I say!) freelance person who worked on ships as they sailed around? Unfortunately I am not located near a Family Research Centre to order any Microfische and I found that joining the British Mariners List was fruitless - any suggestion would be most welcome??
