Hello list First, thanks to joining the list I've got further with my research in the last week than in the previous three years! So thanks to all those knowledgeable and resourceful researchers out there for sharing. Secondly, I have failed to find any info on my grandfather, John Lewis (b.1875, married Annie Boyce 1899) who hanged himself in about 1932. I can't find a death certificate or any other information. I know he was a docker on Liverpool Docks, and in the Dock battalion of the Liverpool Regiment in 1915. Any bright ideas on investigating suicides in Liverpool about 1932? Thanks Marion, East Sussex
Hi Marion, I must have missed your original message about a John LEWIS who was born in 1875. If I had seen it, I would have responded. Or, perhaps I did, and I have forgotten. My gr-gr-grandfather was a John LEWIS, but born in the 1830's in Liverpool. In the 1850's he married Isabella BURROWS in Liverpool. As far as I know, they only had one child, John "Stanley" LEWIS, born Dec. 1859 in Liverpool. (There is more information in archives of this List.) John had 2 older sisters which I know very little about. He had 3 brothers, I think, and they all worked as "Clerks" - so they all were educated. From memory, 3 worked in attorney's offices (US term), and one worked at a Dock office. There is some information on the families of the brothers in the archives of the List. I don't recall whether any of the brothers had a son, John, b1875. I've been told that LEWIS is a very popular name in Liverpool and surrounding areas, so it's possible my John LEWIS had no connection to your John LEWIS. But, what surprises me is that I very rarely see a query about the name.
