Yes, I think this could be what happened, TJ. I did find a similar article from the newspapers of the day as sent in constantly by Jane Campbell (thanks Jane) http://www.old-merseytimes.co.uk/pilotboat1.html Sometimes people forget exactly what happened - 23 people died, but it was the sinking of the Liverpool Pilot Boat that caused the deaths - not people being swept away. Ainsdale Beach doesn't really have the sort of tide (I don't think - I'm no expert) that would sweep 16 people away. I have written to the lady concerned pointing this out to her; it's unlikely that two such incidents happened here so close to each other. Thank you for your interest Marged
