Searching for the Hughes family, originally from Ireland, (either County Mayo or County Sligo) living in Liverpool from the 1830/40's until ??. Michael was the son of Denis and Margaret Hughes; he married Catherine Barrett at St. Peter's R.C. Chapel, Seel St., Liverpool, in 1842. Their children were: Thomas, Dennis, Margaret, Patrick and Ellen. Dennis (my great-grandfather) left England between 1861 and 1870. In the UK Census of 1861, he is listed with his mother (a widow) in Liverpool and, in the US Census of 1870, he is living in Duryea, Pennsylvania, USA, with a family whose last name is McGowan. Michael Hughes' sister and Dennis' aunt Esther married John McGowan in 1843; they were married in St. Mary's R.C. Chapel, Edmund St., Liverpool.
