The poet Arthur Hugh Clough 1819-61,son of a Liverpool cotton dealer, and who is said by Nicholas Monsarrat to be commemorated by the above plaque, had these well known words of wisdom in his published work, that might have been specifically aimed to give encouragement to us in our genealogical endeavours: 'Say not, the struggle naught availeth, The Labour and the wounds are vain, ......'
