    3. The surgeon, Keith Monsarrat listed in Gore's Directory 1906, operated some years later to relieve the burst stomach ulcer of my grandfather Samuel STOCK. He had refused to be admitted to hospital and the surgery was carried out on the kitchen table at the patient's home in Rainford, St Helens, followed by a complete recovery. Can anybody confirm the plaque? 3. Sorry, I should have said that Nicholas Monsarrat was the man who wrote the book "The Cruel Sea". I can't confirm the plaque, but may be able to go and look one day. Incidentally, re. the name - I thought it showed French extraction, but I've been looking at a map of the area north east of Wigan, between Bolton and Horwich, and there's an area called MONTSERRAT up there. -- David Long Sankey Canal Restoration Society http://www.scars.org.uk/ Updated June 2001 - another issue of our magazine CANAL CUTTINGS - illustrated

    3. Re: Nicholas Monsarrat/Montserrat The following is taken from Nicholas Monsarrat's autobiography "Life is a four-letter word": "...owing to a long-standing caprice of my mother, my birth had been registered in the wrong name. For certain interior reasons, Mother had always favoured a fancier spelling of our surname, which was sufficiently odd in any case; there was, she assured me many years later, A French nobleman, the Marquis de Montserrat, who was 'definitely related', and that was the way she was going to spell it,'whatever your father says'. So there my birth-certificate lies, and will lie forever, recording my name as 'Montserrat' in plain, unvarnished misinformation, although my father, and his before him, and all the family trees ever climbed by the inquisitive, has never waivered from 'Monsarrat'."
