    3. Sandra I lived close to the TA Barracks in Aigburth Road in the late 1960's / early 1970's Every Sunday morning a lone piper played / practiced on the parade ground at the rear of the building. He walked backwards and forwards all the time. My Dad used to say he did that because a moving target is harder to hit! We assumed he was attached to the TA in some way. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sandra in Liverpool via" <eng-liverpool@rootsweb.com> To: <ENG-LIVERPOOL@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 31, 2014 11:38 AM Subject: [ENG-LIV] 1950's memory > > Dear Listers, As A child living in the area of Aigburth between Aigburth > Road and North Sudley Road - 1950's -we regularly had a lone Scottish > Piper who walked (at least) along N.Sudley Road. 3. As you probably know for the British census you MUST be there on the actual date of the census. In the US I have found people listed in two different places and once an entire family -they must have moved from a home in which the census taker arrived before they moved and arrived at the new home before the census taker arrived there. ;-) In the 1881 census Annie is described as a “mariner’s wife” so the obvious answer is he was on a ship. If the ship was in port he would be listed but if it was at sea- not. 3. Thank you, Christine, for the information about the Crosby Library. I will reach out to them. Thank you, Joan, for your response. Owen (age 1) is living at 29 Oak Street in Birkenhead on the 1851 census. In 1861, the family is at 5 Pine Grove in Bootle cum Linacre. In 1871, Owen (age 20) is living with his sister Alice (O’Neil) Howard and her family at 11 Linacre in Bootle/Derby. Owen came to the U.S. in the early 1870s. After marrying Annie and having their first child in Fall River, Massachusetts, it appears that they were in New York for the birth of daughter Annie. Annie and 4 children are in Liverpool for the 1881 census (I don’t know where Owen was). I found Owen in an 1890 Fall River directory and he became a naturalized U.S. citizen there in 1902. I do not know where he or his family lived in other years until Catherine and Joseph get married in New York City in 1905 and 1909, respectively. In 1871, Annie Farrell (age 16) was living with her family at 28 Charters Street (?) in the Howard Street sub-registration district of the Liverpool registrations district. 3. My O'Neill ancestors spent some time in Liverpool but I have only been able to find limited information. The 1881 UK Census shows Annie O'Neill (wife of mariner Owen) living at 50 Howe Street with children Henry, Annie, Kate and Joseph. Owen and Annie (nee Farrell) were married in Massachusetts (USA) where Henry was born. According to the 1881 census, Annie was born in New York around 1878 (I have yet to find any record of her birth). The census shows Kate (Catherine Marie) and Joseph Henry being born around June 1880 (have not been able to locate any birth records). Another researcher has their birthday as August 23, 1880 and suggests that they may have been baptized at the Church of St. James Bootle. I contacted the Church of St. James and was told that their older records reside at the Crosby Library. I tried emailing the library but the email addresses on different websites are not valid. Any suggestions on how I can contact the library or otherwise access birth or baptism records for twins Catherine and Joseph? Other information: Owen was born in Birkenhead around 1850 to Henry & Margaret O'Neill and the 1861 and 1871 census has them living in Bootle cum Linacre. My thanks in advance for any assistance you can give me. Bill Mayrose Massachusetts, USA
