Hi John, I looked for the L.A.V. nearly twenty years ago now; my great grandfather was a member about 1862 when he was an 18-year-old. I did find a small book about them - as I recall it, Artillery Volunteers were first raised during the Napoleonic Wars as militia forces. There were thought to be virtually no surviving records. Great grandfather emigrated to South America in Nov 1862 and never returned. One day I will finish an article about him for the Liverpool fhs! BTW, does anyone know anything about his younger sister, Hannah Margaret SLOANE (1847-1922) who married Alec Goodall at Walton-on-the-Hill in 1870? Hi Maggie, What we believe about JJS is that he died after falling from a horse in Cambridge St, East Collingwood, although I have also been given to believe from family historians that it may have been diphtheria and that he died "in the bush". He is believed to be one of the 400 un-named souls who rest in the Bristol Hill Cemetery in Maryborough, although this is a considerable distance away. I've searched Trove for a record of the accident, as well as family notices for more clues on his passing and burial, but to no avail. Do you have an official source? It is said that his wife Sophia was treated badly by the rest of the family and decided to return to England with the four children. Another was born on the voyage home, but did not survive (another reason for locating the shipping records). Hi all. Can someone please help me with a problem I have. I am looking for any ideas on how to find more information on my great grandmother's brother, John PRESCOTT, who was born in Downholland 18 Jan 1864. Both of his parents died before he was 3 and the 1871 Census finds him in the Wigan Road Union Workhouse at Ormskirk. In 1881, he is an apprentice bootmaker under Edward Mayson in Burscough. He enlisted in the army, Liverpool Regiment, 18 Jan 1884 (his 20th birthday). He transferred to 1st Class Army Reserve on 17 Jan 1891 on completion of his service. In 1891, he is boarding with his sister, Mary CALLAND in Albert Road Widnes. I have his attestation papers dated 12 June 1900 which indicate he signed up to serve in the Liverpool Regiment for a period of no less than 4 years, until reaching the age of 41, or 21 years total service. It states that he had previously served in the regiment. His address at that time is given as 20 Peelhouse Lane Widnes, which was the home of his brother James PRESCOTT. He served in South Africa in 1901 and 1902. He was discharged on completion of the terms of his enlistment on 18 Jan 1905. His intended residence is given as 30 Peel House Lane, Widnes (home of his brother James) My problem is that I have no record of him after that time. I can not find him on the 1911 Census. His brother James died in 1910. James' daughters are still living at 30 Peel House Lane, but John is not with them. I have looked at the civil registration death indexes and have found several deaths of John Prescott's born about 1864. However, I hesitate to start buying certificates blindly as this could be expensive as well as time consuming. Plus, he may have emigrated at some point. Does anyone know whether the Army, or the Legion, keeps records of the deaths of former soldiers? If they do, that would seem to be a way to possibly track him down. If I can determine when he died I can then order the correct certificate for more details. Thank you for any ideas that you might have. Vern in Ontario, Canada

Hello John A quick google search did bring up the following mention and the reference states this is pre 1900: William Brown, a great commercial power in Liverpool, raised and commanded the 1st. Liverpool Artillery Volunteers at the age of 75 and is reputed to have contributed £3000 per annum to their expenses (a figure that is equivalent to over £300,000 today). I hope this may help. Ted, I think the firm may have been called "Tattis", or some similar spelling. In the late 1940s I visited a house in the area where the mother ran a little cottage industry on behalf of the crisp manufacturers, filling those little blue screws of paper with salt - remember them? Sometimes they flowed OK, but other times they were quite damp? I remember that they got paid something like half a crown per hundred, or it may have been per thousand, for the finished screws. The kids all helped, and would run in from the street, fill a few papers, and go out to play again. Honestly I kid you not - food hygiene didn't come into it. Have to say I am not certain which crisp company it was - there may have been more than one but Tattis is the only name that comes to mind. Marj hi everybody, do anyone remember the firm that used to make potato crisps in the celler of a house in Boaler Street, back in the 1950,s? I really would like to know about one person in particular who I believe was the owner of the firm, in particular around the 1933 to 34 years, I would love to hear from anyone who worked there or just knew about the owners? Its nothing serious just that he was involved in my family at that time as a good friend of my grandmother and her family. Thanks very much. Dear Fellow Listers, I thought I would take this opportunity to post a query. It is perhaps a bit of a needle in a haystack situation but if anyone can offer any valuable suggestions it would be appreciated. I have an ancestor by the name of John KAY or John KEY who was born in Knutsford, Cheshire in 1787. John appears to have been married twice firstly in 1807 and again in 1824. Two of his children were baptised at Witten in Cheshire and the baptismal register gives the names of the grandparents and their place of abode. In this case John's parents were given as James and Sarah and their place of abode was in both cases given as LIVERPOOL. The first baptism was recorded in 1808 and the second in 1830. There is a baptism in Knutsford for a John KAY whose parents were James KAY and Sarah on 28 October 1787 and a marriage of a James KEY Stocking Weaver to a Sarah FOXLEY in 1785. In 1786 there is a baptism for a Nancy KEY whose father James is a Servant to Mr HEATLY. I would like to confirm when and where in LIVERPOOL James and Sarah lived. As there are no further baptisms in Knutsford or in Cheshire that I can find did they move to Liverpool after 1787 and did they have any further children born there. Were they actually alive when their Grandchildren where christened and if so where did they die and where are they buried. Did their son John also live in LIVERPOOL at some stage. John was a Rockgetter who lived at Wincham in Cheshire. His daughter Ellen was baptised in 1808 but there is no record of any further children to this marriage. If I were to look for James and Sarah in LIVERPOOL would this refer to a wider geographical area around LIVERPOOL or is there one area or church that I should be looking at in particular if I want to find information about this couple and their families. Hoping that someone can help point me in the right direction. Regards, Christine
