Does anybody know whether there are any records of Liverpool publicans transferring their licenses and what information they might contain? I have found at least two occasions of an ancestor transferring her license in the Liverpool Mercury and two incidences of her appearing before the police courts for Sunday trading. I haven't researched a publican before so any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you Claire

Hi Marion. It may be that Annie was mistaken about her father's name ( if he had died when she was very small ) or about where or even which year exactly she was born. But in 1891 there is an Ann Boyce with her mother Hannah, born Ireland living with cousins called Doherty in the Scotland area of Liverpool in one of the courts , who may be your one. Her mother is a widow. 1891 England Census about Ann Boyce Name: Ann Boyce Age: 14 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1877 Relation: Cousin Gender: Female Where born: Liverpool, Lancashire, England Civil parish: Liverpool Ecclesiastical parish: St Matthias County/Island: Lancashire Country: England Street Address:3 House 6 Court. I think this might be the Annie Ellen Boyce on the 1881 census who is living on a barge with her father William Henry a barge master and her mother Matilda. there is a Hugh Boyce in Liverpool in the 1881 with two daughters. Perhaps one of them had Annie as a second name 1881 England Census about Margaret A. Boyce Name: Margaret A. Rachel Looking Maguire /Street up in Gore's 1911 Directory, it consists of nothing else but industrial premises, paint makers, iron founders but no private premises and finishing at Number 38 on the even number side and it was in the industrial pert of the city. Not a healthy location for a hospital. If you provide the name of the family, I can check the residents of Wilbraham Street -off Scotland Road for you as they were in 1911. Terry Heath Cheltenham UK

Hello all I'm new to the list but am hoping someone can assist with my research into my grandmother's history. I have been to Liverpool Records Office furing a brief visit to the Pool last Oct, but was still unable to locate any record of her birth. Her name was Annie Boyce, born 1876, married 1899 to John Lewis. The marriage certificate gives her father's name as HUGH BOYCE (deceased). I know from her that her father was born in Ireland, but there was never any mention of her mother. I have copy of her marriage certificate, and have tracked down some WW1 records that show the famiy living in several different addresses but I can't find census records of the family, and no trace of her birth records, although I believe she was born in Liverpool. Annie is buried in Yew Tree Cemetery (died 1962). Her husband John is reported to have committed suicide (by hanging) in or around 1932, but I can find no record of this either. Does anyone have any ideas as to where I can go from here to trace Annie's birth (the family was R.C., the last address I remember her living was in Field Street. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks Marion

Hi Listers I have a family in Toxteth Park (271 Beaufort street) where the head was a shipwright. A marriage certificate gives that they were married in Liverpool in 1852 with the groom giving his occupation as boat builder living in Blundell street, Liverpool. Today I searched on ancestry.com at the library but couldn't find a likely match for the 1871 or 1861 Census. Where trhe names matched, the age didn't reflect the marriage certificate; where names and ages seemed to match, the children's names were wrong. HELP! Hi there, I have an ancestor who died in Demerara, British Guyana. Are there any records of who signed up to go there in Liverpool. His name was Alexander Campbell MacDonald and he was only 19 when he died. I have no idea whether he was enlisted or just went as an immigrant. The Liverpool Mercury records on August 9th, 1856 that "July 10th, in his 19th year, at Demerara, Alexander Campbell MacDonald, 4th son of Hugh MacDonald of Boisdale" died. Hello all, I need help with a Liverpool street location. GRO birth certificate of 1889 list 'where born' as 16 St. Stephen St. and then something circled next to the street name that I cannot read. Their previous address was 31 Clayton St. sub-district of Islington. Is St. Stephen St. closer to the docks? The father was a ship painter, journeyman. Thank you. Kay
