Hi Ruth, Civil registration of marriages began in 1837. LancsBMD and Freebmd- do not contain any marriages before 1837. Do you have any other information apart from the year 1836? A parish, address or a census entry might help to narrow down where the marriage took place and from that you could find the date. Hi Kathy, Thanks for all your help. I would appreciate seeing some copies of the 1891 and 1901 census regarding Susan Ashton and family. You have given me a few things to look up on and I am ever so grateful. I have found it hard to know where to look being here in AUS. Much appreciated. John Ashton must have died between 1891 and 1901 because in the 1901 census Susan senior is widowed and the family are living in Crosby, near Liverpool. Send a request to this list if you do not have copies. A search of the IGI on the Familysearch website finds a probable baptism for Susan in St Peter's Liverpool 18 Sep 1883. However the IGI also gives births in Antrim for William 22 April 1870 and Jane 14 Feb 1872. Mother is named as Susan Sharp(e). They appear to be from films of the Irish GRO and I believe the info should enable you to get the birth certs for these children. Searching the Liverpool Ancestors site at http://liverpool-ancestors.co.uk/ finds the burial for a Hugh Sharpe ASHTON - possibly worth further investigation A search of FreeBMD using *Sharp for the first name and ASHTON for the surname brings up a few results worth investigation. You could order marriage certs or marriages could be cross referenced with searches in http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/cgi/marrind.cgi?county=lancashire which might give you the name of the churches. Hi Ruth, I thought MARSHMAN was an unusual middle name so I did a bit more searching. I went to the Familysearch pilot site http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=home There was an interesting entry for a marriage for Francis Oakes ASHTON. His age fits with the son of John and Susan ASHTON - but have another look at his father's name! Groom's name: Francis Oakes Ashton Groom's age: 29 Bride's name: Ellen Lea Bride's age: 23 Residence: Everton, Lancashire, England Event place: Christ Church-Great Homer Street, Everton, Lancashire, England Event date: 1908 Groom's father's name: John Marshall Ashton Father of bride's name: George Henry Lea Batch number: M15617-4 Record group: England-VR Film number: 1546074 Collection: England Marriages 1700-1900 I then did a bit more searching using *Marshall ASHTON in the search fields and turned up a few more entries on the pilot site, Ancestry and freeBMD, mostly connected to Liverpool. However while on the Familysearch pilot site I also found this marriage entry in the Irish civil registration indexes Name: John Marshall Ashton Registration district: Belfast Record type: MARRIAGES Registration date - quarter and year: 1867 Film number: 101250 Volume: 16 Page: 443 Digital GS number: 4179383 Image number: 00193 Collection: Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes 1845-1958 I cross referenced it for Susan Sharp and this result turned up. Name: Susan Sharp Registration district: Belfast Record type: MARRIAGES Registration date - quarter and year: 1867 Film number: 101250 Volume: 16 Page: 443 Digital GS number: 4179383 Image number: 00337 Perhaps you need to check your source material for your original information on John's middle name! You should be able to order a photo copy of the marriage entry. regards Kathy Wirral -------------------------------------------------- From: "Ruth" <ruthashton@dcsi.net.au> Sent: Saturday, August 08, 2009 10:05 AM To: <ENG-LIVERPOOL@rootsweb.com> Subject: [ENG-LIV] ashtons in liverpool

I have found a possible ancestor in HIS MAJESTY'S PRISON H.M. Prison, Hornby Road, Liverpool in the 1911 census. Any suggestions about how I could find out more information such as why they were there? Dave Carr
According to a blog by Museum staff, Bellefield House was owned by "Bully" Bates.. a ship owner of the worst kind ! google search for Bellefield . Barbara in Liverpool
I believe one of my family worked at BELLEFIELD HOUSE in West Derby in the early 1920's. I think this was owned by Cunard at the time. Can anyone tell me whether there are any Cunard staff records available for this time. Many thanks Megan
Dear Bill: Thank you for your e mail. The company that Mr William Backhouse was connected with "J Barnes & co., Forrest St & 77 Kitchner ST Liverpool, Ship repaiers , " Thats part of a letter when he applied for release from military service in 1917 . Now he may have had connection with Bachouse Bloor but I have no evidence of that. Again thanks for the information. Paul (Victoria) ----- Original Message ----- From: "William E. Dear List My ggf's first born (in 1849) was Mary Looms, she hailed from Llanfair PG in Anglesey and appears to have been brought up by her Aunt Mary Williams at the Stag Public House. In the 1871 census she appears as Mary Sprat having with her a child George 1 year old born in Liverpool. The Patriach of the Looms family, Thomas Looms, was a railwayman and hailed from Leicestershire but travelled with the construction of the railway finally settling in Anglesey where there are still many members of the Looms family. It is said that there were three brothers but I can only trace Thomas (b1825) on Anglesey perhaps there was a Liverpool connection which might explain why Mary had her child George there and perhaps she returned to have more little Sprats? All help gratefully received. Barry
