There's no single record source for that period. Try the largest - New York - first, at Castle Garden _www.castlegarden.org_ (http://www.castlegarden.org) in the 1880s & early 90s, then Ellis Island thereafter _www.ellisisland.org_ (http://www.ellisisland.org) . These are on-line and free. If no hits, try the other main ports: Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore etc. In a message dated 9/5/2009 3:25:00 P.M. Hi Sandra, I had a look and there are no records for any Benjamin Alexander arriving in either Canada or the U.S that would match your info. Sorry I couldn't help. Hi List I have an ancestor who's occupation is listed in the census (1841) as being aTown Waiter/Sexton living in Toxteth Liverpool. I have discovered that TownWaiter would be a Customs man but have no other information such as who would have employed him and what duties he did? I am assuming it is to do with customs as in today. I have another ancestor who was a Customs Officer who was employed by the Royal navy same sort of thing or not. Any help would be gratefully appreciated Regards Mike Hayes
Hi everyone, Has anyone succesfully found a policeman on this census? It looks as though they are all listed just by their initials - great! The same goes for prisoners and lunatics as well..... My grandad was a policeman, so I guess needle and haystack spring to mind.... I know his approximate location (county) from his service records, so I suppose that is a start. Hi, couldn`t help reading your adoption query! I have a friend aged 62 yrs who was adopted at the age of three weeks of age! His Mother was not allowed by her family to keep him...He was adopted by "FRIENDS OF THE FAMILY" and his birth mother was sent to America to live with her sister, where she married and had three more children.. we found out where his birth mother lived and wrote to her, but had no answer! The boy who was adopted knew who his birth family were and was in touch with his mother`s Brother, but the brother or any on the family refused to tell him about his real father, who we know was at one time married to his mother`s sister!!! But the adopted son, cannot find out from the courts anything at all and he is desperate to know for sure who is father was!! Any ideas at all?.. Would love to hear what people have to say about his case?... From court records I have the name of his mother and the circumstances of his abandonment. Not a pretty story. What would a certified researcher do in this case? I think I would research the name as well because you may find a link between the families particularly if it was an adoption before 1950. But for family trees I think only the birth parents line is really valid. Any idea where poor people were buried back in the 1840s if living in the Low Hill area (Trowbridge Street)? I'm looking for a a parishioner of St. Peters, but no OBIT as of yet and there is no master index to all the cemeteries at the LRO for a quick peek. Could it have been Necropolis? Any other major possibilities? Are there any burial register indexes online? NEWGREEN was the surname in December 1847. I know of a total of 17 family members in all of the UK during this period. Might be a quick search if I could narrow the search criteria for the LRO staff. Carolyn, As an adoptee myself I've done both lines, but it would depend on your interest/desires. If adopted as an infant then maybe you stick with the adoptive family, otherwise maybe you'd be interested in both or at least finding the reason for giving the child up for adoption from probate or other records if that might have been stated back then. Good luck! Mike "What do you do when you discover that an ancestor has been > adopted? Do you still research the name or try to find the birth > parents and research that family? Hi List, I found some births of interest on the IGI that were recorded at the Newington Chapel, Renshaw Street, Conliverpoolia, Liverpool. Can anyone tell me more about this church? Are there any records on the Lanc_ OPR site? Thanks, Carolyn
Carolyn The directories that are sold on CDROM certainly can. Those on microfilm are just films of the original pages and the volumes are listed by streets and surnames but it takes good eyesight and lots of patience on a viewer, neither of which apply to me. I have sent you copies of [a] a street index page and [b] a name page. On the 1911 Directory CDROM, there are indexes for the street's initial and the surname initial, then its just a matter of looking through page after page. I assume that all Gore's Directories follow the same pattern. Terry Heath Cheltenham UK
