Don't remember that an explanation was given, but I'm sure they're working on the problem. 2. Ruth
    3. Hello Listers I'm looking for my Grandmothers family. Her name was Lilly Nelson. We are unsure whether she spelt it Lilly, Lily, or Lillie. She was born either the 19th or 22nd of September 1916 and married Thomas Eric Ashton in 1936. They had 3 children Joyce, Maureen and Phillip. I am interested to find out if Lilly had any brothers and sisters and what her parents names were. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Ruth

    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike Kendall" Sent: Monday, August 31, 2009 8:29 PM <<I'm looking for an obit for Mary Newgreen who died 9 Dec 1847 of 29 Trowbridge Street Liverpool. Any idea where she could have been buried? If anyone has access to St. Peter's records I would also like her marriage record in 1810 (maybe in April) to a Peter Newgreen (possibly spelled Nygren); her maiden name was CARR. I believe he or his parents were from Sweden or Norway. BT or parish record source information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Mike>> Mike, >From St.Peter's, Church Street, Liverpool. Marriage Register 1810. Entry No.148. "Peter NEAGRAM of the Parish of Liverpool, Mariner, and Mary CARR, of the same Parish, Spinster, were married in this church by Banns this twenty- third day of April in the year One thousand, eight hundred and ten, by me, John Pulford, Curate". Peter signed the register Peter NYGREN; Mary made 'her mark'. Their witnesses were Jacob Lohmann and James Taylor - both of whom witnessed various other marriages at the church around that time. [LRO Ref:283PET/3/7 Item3]. Mary was interred in Low Hill Cemetery (the Necropolis). Entry No.32169 in the cemetery's Burial Register for 1845-52 recorded Mary NEWGREEN, aged 65years. Last residence Trowbridge Street, died 9th December 1847, cause of death - 'Old age'. Date of Interment 15th December 1847, grave No.7684. [LRO Ref:352CEM/2/2/3 Item2]. The cemetery's Order Book also confirmed much of the above information with the charge for her burial being ten shilling's. It was a 'public' or 'paupers' grave and on 15th December at 3.00pm, Mary was interred with five others. Within a week, the number had risen to thirty interments in her grave. The cemetery closed in 1898, and although memorial inscriptions were recorded, for grave No.7684 the register simply stated 'No Stone'. [LRO Ref:352CEM/2/1/4 Item2]. There were no obituaries for Mary printed in the Liverpool newspapers that I could find. Apart from a few exceptions, obituaries at that time tended to be placed by the more wealthy or professional acquaintances of the deceased. Mary, I suspect, was less fortunate. Regards, John Hardy.

    3. I've noticed a fair number of mistakes in transcription, so your folks might be there but wrongly indexed. Maybe if you try "creative" searching you might find them. Searching by first name, date of birth, and place of birth has turned up some of my guys. For example, in the 1901 census O'Rourke shows up as Okonski, which makes regular searching a bit fruitless. 3. John, A simple "thank you" doesn't seem to me to be enough to show my appreciation for this information. I believe the importance of this simple phrase is lost sometimes since we see it so frequently on the list, especially from those not living in the UK. Please know that my appreciation for your efforts is heartfelt. It is the time and effort put forth by fellow volunteers that makes researching from abroad a pleasure. I am truly in your debt! Please call on me directly when needed. Best regards, Mike > Mike, > > >From St.Peter's, Church Street, Liverpool. 3. A town waiter was originally a night watchman; by 1841 the municipal corporations were employing them as the official town band licensed to teach music in their spare time. Source: P. M. Horsley. "Charles Avison: The Man and His Milieu" (1974) Vol 55 (No. 1, Jan) Music & Letters pp. 5-23 at p. 6 The OED also gives this sense. Alexander Carlyle "Autobiography" (1860) 75 "His band..consisted of two dancing-school fiddlers and the town-waits." 8. a. pl. A small body of wind instrumentalists maintained by a city or town at the public charge. Also sing., a member of this body. Obs. They played for the daily diversion of the councillors, on ceremonial and festive occasions, and as a town or city band they entertained the citizens, perambulating the streets, often by night or in the early morning.
