John I have sent you a copy of the list from the 1911 Directory of Liverpool off list. As far as I can see, the ,most likely is the Imperial Tobacco trading as Ogden's. Terry Heath Cheltenham UK
Hello Carolyn, There is a legend in our Appleton family that a young girl escaped from a convent in Europe to marry an Appleton mariner. It isn't Johanna (Mother)as she was born in Liverpool.Probably isn't Ellen Vearing (Grandmother)although I havn't found her birth the Vearing families are mostly from Poulton Le Flyde near Liverpool.Perhaps it was Homer's wife??Then again some legends are just not true. The Appleton families were generally connected to the sea, mariners & ship builders.I found a baptism for William Appleton (?4 x g grandfather)1766 @ St Peters, father Homer.Still searching,Judith _________________________________________________________________ Get Hotmail on your iPhone Find out how here http://windowslive.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=845706

I also have a big headache trying to trace the Smiths, mine is a Mary Jane Webster who married a Smith??no more info on this?? I am also using the Scotlands people site to trace a marriage. She was born in Liverpool 1872, father Charles Webster, b 1849 Kirkudbright Scotland, mother Alice Kearney b 1848 Liverpool. is anyone on the list tracing this family. Mary Jane also went on to marry Robert Norman Saunders in 1907 according to the 1911 census. I have found Robert on the 1911 census but no Mary Jane or Alice Rowland Saunders b 1909, can anyone on the list give clues about short cuts on the 1911 census, I have tried typing in just the surname and various districts in Liverpool, also first name and year. I had such hopes of finding them on this census but no such luck. Hoping for some help. Thank you Emily
Does any list-member know if there was a cigarette factory, or factories, in the Toxteth area at the time of the 1911 Census? If so, what were their names and locations please? John

Thank you David for the information, especially the Prussian history. I have found a book which lists Sydney deserters online so it looks like a visit to the state library. Much thanks Anne

Good Morning Carolyn, All my Appletons were from Liverpool. My 4xg grandfather William b.1802 was baptised at St.Peters,he married Johanna Derbyshire 1823 at Holy Trinity. They had a son Homer bpt.1824 St Peters and a 2nd son George Homer bpt.1835 at St.Peters. (Johanna's father was George)They also had 3 daughters who emigrated to Australia.I believe the sons died in childhood but I have never found their deaths. Some descendents of William's brother Henry emigrated to Canada.I really hope we can find a connection!Judith _________________________________________________________________ Take a peek at other people's pay and perks Check out The Great Australian Pay Check http://clk.atdmt.com/NMN/go/157639755/direct/01/

Hi Paul, thanks for your reply. After 30 years hunting for a Step-G-Grandmother for a cousin ( her Great Grandmother), who has a birth cert. for an Alice SMITH b 5 Feb 1857 19 Crosbie St, Liverpool. father Bernard and mother Bridget SMITH formerly WHITE dated 27 July 1978, when the cousin visited the GRO in London, it's not amusing!!!. There is a skeleton in the cupboard here of course, my devout Anglican G-Grandfather was already married with 3 boys. He came out to New Zealand closely followed by a pregnant Alice. All passenger marriage lists out here are basic, Mr. Mrs and Miss SMITH. The only form that hasn't been fudged is Alice's death cert. but no maiden name is given for her mother. I am not a puritan by any stretch of the imagination. My own G-Grandmother died at the early age of 24 and one does wonder why. With thanks, SKS might now help out my cousin's research. Regards, Les. #17255 Ps. I have just applied here in New Zealand for William and Alice marriage cert., but won't hold my breath as to details being any different to what's gone before. les. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul Goodman" <paul.goodman513@ntlworld.com> To: <eng-liverpool@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 07, 2009 10:22 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-LIV] SMITH > Hi Les, > > I agree about everyone having a SMITH.
