My Grandfather was JAMES CALDWELL JONES born 1845 in Tranmere, Cheshire. He married Margaret TODD in 1866 and Clarice Ethel VENABLES in 1908. From 1871 onwards he lived in Toxteth. I have him in all the censuses from 1851-1911, bar 1891. Now comes the problem! My mother often spoke of her half-siblings, Charles, Mabel, Rose and Daisy Jones. Charles, Mabel and Rose are with James and ?rd wife Clarice in 1911. But first wife, Margaret doesn’t die until 1906 and is buried in family plot in Toxteth cemetery. Who is the mother of Charles, Mabel, Rose and Daisy? Is James really their father? My mother said that they were sent to Richmond Lodge ... what sort of establishment was this?. Dorothy, if you were here, I'd give you a kiss! Thank you so very much for this information! Henry and Dorothy were my 4X great grandparents and this is the first mention of her maiden name. Does it by chance mention their parents' names or ages, etc? Where you have the children's baptisms - do you mean that Eliza and Anne were in St. Mary's? Young babies and children were sometimes put out to "foster" homes by the Workhouse as well - it was cheaper than providing care for them within the Workhouse. If a woman was widowed and had to return to work she had very little option but to try to find someone to care for any children too young to be left alone - you often see Nurse Children in areas where the Cotton Mills or other industry was. Same situation for a single mother. Local newspapers often carried adverts for women offering a place for a child and there are the Court records of the notorious "baby farmers" who were responsible for the deaths of many babies and infants. Could a list-member please look up Susannah (Susanna) Wood(s) in the 1841 Census and provide me with any family information. She was born either in Liverpool or West Derby. John
I should have added that of all five nurse children, only one was of breast-feeding age. John
John, hi, its simple enough, the six children are either children of the family, who unfortunaely dont have the human milk to feed the children so they get someone in who can breast feed the children, usually a neighbour or another member of the family, or maybe its someone in the family who has enough milk in her breasts to feed neighbours children at a cost, it was a common enough in those dayss when money was as short as sit was, no family allowances in thos days. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Lloyd" <j_m_c.lloyd@virgin.net> To: <eng-liverpool@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 14, 2009 3:17 PM Subject: [ENG-LIV] Nurse Children >I have come across a household of nine people in Cherry Lane, > Walton-on-the Hill, in the 1851 Census consisting of a woman head of > household aged 54, her sister aged 68, a niece aged 35, a lodger aged > 14, and six 'nurse children'. > > Can a list-member explain this domestic arrangement please? > > John > ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ > > Admin Message - List guidelines: > http://freespace.virgin.net/genealogical.collections/AdminMessage.htm > > The list admin can be contacted at > Eng-Liverpool-admin@rootsweb.com > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > ENG-LIVERPOOL-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No virus found in this incoming message. Following the chat on shipping coulod I please ask a shipping question? I am researching the family of Henry WILSON b 1791 Eng d 1852 at ADELAIDE South Australia. His occupation is recorded as "Gentleman" and his family appear to be of means in wealth and status. (No convicts here!!) His Will which was made in Plymouth shortly before emigrating with his entire family indicates he has a brother William WIILSON in Liverpool. (The other executor is John Hall FRANCE of London, also named as a brother ?) I have been lead to believe that the WILSON family were in Shipping in Liverpool. Have I been watching too many weeks of "Who do you think you are" or am I right in thinking there is something odd about a whole family (youngest were teenagers) bringing everything accross the world like that? The last address in England appears to be 10 Pleasant Plce Islington Middlesex. Would that be an address of means in 1848? Is there a Wilson family in shipping at this time in Liverpool? Any comments much appreciated. Anne Adelaide South Aust. PS His wife was Phillis AMEY m Surrey 1821 Children Henry France Wilson m MILBURN Phillis Elizabeth Wilson m J Jewell HALL William Wilson m ?
