    1. [ENG-LIV] 1824 Cheshire will
    2. Carolyn Parker
    3. Dear List, I just obtained a copy - very legible! - of my ggg grandfather's will dated Jan. 1824. He died in 1827. it is a trust under will and states that his son William should receive 20 pounds and the rest of his estate be divided into two equal parts after debts, etc.. and given to his other two children, etc... My question; the estate was valued at 800 pounds- why 20 pounds to one son? Were annual accountings for trusts under will required then as they are today ( in Massachusetts, anyway) What would the value of such an estate be in today's terms? Thanks, Carolyn

    1. [ENG-LIV] Mary MacDonald court case 1857....outcome?
    2. sandra moffatt
    3. I have an "interesting" ancestor who was taken to court in early 1857 for apparently stealing some fabric that was delivered to her address in error. She was well known to the judge at the time so obviously had done other illegal things in the past. The Liverpool Mercury shows the article about this on Feb.2, 1857 and ends with "there must be a verdict for the plaintiff with immediate execution". What I'm wondering is if the story was followed up? Is there another article after this showing the outcome? Does someone have access to the local papers from Feb-1857 onwards for that year? Any help appreciated. Sandra _________________________________________________________________ New! Get to Messenger faster: Sign-in here now! http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9677407

    3. A journeyman is a timed served tradesman who was entitled to a daily wage (fr Journee). It does not refer in any way to the worker being itinerant. Whilst people have always travelled for work this wasn't easy until quite recently because the authorities did not like unemployed people arriving in their parishes. And if you think about it most places already had plenty of joiners of their own. But the large centres of expansion did suck in workers of all grades from the surrounding counties and beyond. There are actually demographic maps of this process. And of course you can see it in the census. 1841 falls in the period known as the Hungry Forties. If the family were economically distressed at that time it would make sense to up and move to the biggest centre they could think of. Mere by the way is about 25 miles from Bath, and in those days that was a reasonable day's walk for a man in his prime. 50 miles was not unheard of. 1. [ENG-LIV] Frederick Wm Hills
    2. Sylvia Hughes
    3. I have just received my grandfather's death certificate. It states that at the time of his death in Belfast he was with his brothr-in-law Frederick Wm Hills. I don't know anything about the Hills connection and would appreciate some help. My grandfather James Burnside was taken ill aboard an Irish ferry from Liverpool to Belfast and died in January 1906 in Belfast where he is now buried. His daughter had a wedding photograph with writing on the back referring to "Mrs Hills, daughter of Mr and Mrs Burnside". I am now trying to find out about the marriage between the Burnside and Hills family. I believe the wedding would have been around 1900/1905 and may have been either Liverpool or Belfast - maybe. Thanks in advance to ANYONE who can help Sylvia, Ontario, Canada.
