Whilst researching my FLEMING ancestors that moved down to Liverpool from Westmorland, I came across this unusual Marriage Notice in the Liverpool Mercury of Saturday November 1, 1862 - HADEN-FLEMING. October 1, at the British Consulate, Port-Au-Prince Haytu, Thomas Haden, Esq., of Gonaives, eldest son of the late Richard Wright Haden, Esq., of Derby, to Fanny Fleming, youngest daughter of Thomas Fleming, Esq., of this town. Fanny was christened FRANCES ISABELLA FLEMING at St Peter, Liverpool on 29 January 1835 - the youngest of 8 children born to Thomas Fleming & Frances (nee Pearce); her father being the son of Leonard Fleming and Mary (nee Coward) - both of whom came from Westmorland. I have Fanny of the 1841 census with her family at Halewood Lane, Much Woolton but had not been able to locate her again until I found this marriage. I am intrigued as to how/why she went out to Haiti. Are there any passenger lists for such a voyage from Liverpool, that might help me locate when she went to Haiti ? If anyone else has Fleming interests in Liverpool, then I would be pleased to hear from them. Derek Bradshaw.
There is an error in the Birthplace stated. There is no Brentwood in Gloucestershire, Only one in Essex and google says that there is on in Tennessee Terry Heath Cheltenham UK
I took pictures of seven grassy spots in Toxteth Park cemetery, I figured that's the least I could do for these poor forgotten (not by me) people. Later that day it hit me, how sad and what wretched lives these folks had. Made me count my blessings. Hi I'd like to chime in on this discussion to let you know that the same thing happened to me in New York City while searching for an 1873 grave! I arrived with my digital camera and great hope. At the cemetery's office I was directed to the location but there was only grass there. Upon questioning the staff I was told that not everyone could afford a stone or other marker or it could have been of poor quality and it decomposed; or buried by wind swept rain, dirt and leaves. Good afternoon, I am in Western Australia researching my maternal family history. My Uncle did a lot of research many years ago and has said that my Great G Grandfather died in Liverpool and was buried in Walton Cemetery. His name was Richard Williams, he was born c 1790 on the Island of Anglesey Wales spent time in India and died we believe in 1837 in Liverpool. Could someone tell me is there a Walton Cemetery and do they have a web page I can search? Thank you very much June

The Toxteth Park Cemetery site, that Claire mentions, http://www.toxtethparkcemetery.co.uk/, has to be one of the finest in the country. It is an absolute labour of love. The transcriptions currently being made, from the dedication of the cemetery in 1856, could not be more comprehensive; name, abode, section number and actual plot number. Link the latter with the section/plot maps that are also available, and you are right on the spot were your ancestor was buried. A year back, I went a step further for my own searches, and superimposed the sections on a current google earth map and then printed that out. A friend went a stage further, and used her gps to add in the co-ordinates for the plots. Last April, armed with the location of some 23 of my forebears, we set off to discover their resting places. Access to the cemetery was easy, and we were able to park conveniently within the grounds. Sadly, however, despite high expectations, we were unable to discover any stonework, vertical or flat, relating to any of my ancestors. In one instance, on an early unconsecrated section, where I had two ancestors buried, just a single solitary headstone showed through the well mown grass. That particular section now seemed in current use for rememberance. Obviously, much work has been done in recent years in renovating this very large South Liverpool resting place. Someone, with more detailed knowledge than myself, should be able to give more detail. However, some sections, because of the their "high" contour, gave the impression that they had been totally covered over, headstones included. Nonetheless, I would not put anyone off making their own searches in a similar way that I did; there are many thousands of graves still visible, and legible. Just to have the data from http://www.toxtethparkcemetery.co.uk/ is a big bonus for me. Mike, I had a similar experience in returning to Merseyside years ago after a then 38 year absence. I was disappointed to find that my Standish kin had no stonework etc to mark their resting places. Then I realized that the Toxteth Park had a large population of working class folks and many of them including my kin lived in the dreaded "Courts" and most likely could not afford any indication to their grave. Others died in the workhouse and would have been buried in a section reserved for that purpose so no indications existed in this area also. One thing I must say is that an employee at the cemetery went to great lengths to help me locate the burial plots, such courtesy, patience and helpfulness is rarely seen these days. A belated hats off the the staff at Toxteth Park cemetery Dave D. > Last April, armed with the location of some 23 of my forebears, we set off > to discover their resting places.
