Thanks to Sally, Allen and Christine I have thomas and Sarah on the 1861 census. I know Thomas married again in 1879 to Hannah Bond, and it is possible Sarah died in 1877, but where they where in 1871 is still a mystery. But thank you for looking for me. Best Wishes Hilary.

Hi Hilary ... and I can't either: nor can I find the marriage on freeBMD or Lancs/CheshireBMD, and I can find only one (slimly) possible candidate for a Sarah Youds in early censuses (1841), but she is several years out in age. Hi Hilaray, Sorry, but I couldn't find Sarah anywhere in 1871 with this information. In fact, I couldn't find her in any census with the people you've mentioned, and I also checked for the obvious mis-spellings. How certain are you of the details that you have on the family? For Sarah Ann Clarke, nee Youds, aged about 29 born in Liverpool, she could be with her husband Thomas born at Chester, and she could be with her daughter aged 10, Mary Jane. Thank You Hilary.

Hello Christine, The only thing I have is the marriage certificate, indicating both parties were of age, and both their fathers were gardeners. I know Mary's wasn't (labourer), so maybe that wasn't William's or father James' occupation either. Mary Brown was born 1845, so likely William Gunning was born around the same time. I'm inclined to think the Gunning name could be Irish. Since I can't find him in the 1871 nor 1881 censuses I have little to go on. Actually, though, I'm more interested in what happened to him after 1877 . . . doubt if he was "out of favour" as his step-daughter kept his photograph, a copy of which is in my possession. Thanks for your interest. Christine Draisey, USA

G'day everyone, My ancestor Hugh Armstrong was born in 1806 in Galloon, County Fermanagh. He married Jane Nichols of Clones in 1832 and had three children before his death in 1843. His youngest child, my Great Great Grandfather was born in 1843 and baptised at Clogh in the parish of Clones, as were his elder siblings, Robert (1833) and Mary Ann (1841). (Clones straddles the Fermanagh-Monaghan border). The next sighting of the family after Hugh's death in 1843, is in Liverpool where his widow, Jane, and two of her children, Mary Ann and Thomas, are living at the time of the 1861 census. I have recently found a Robert Armstrong, born in "Ireland" ca. 1834 also living in Liverpool in the 1861 census. This Robert's marriage certificate gives his father as Hugh, occupation Farmer. Robert is sighted again in 1871 and apppears to have died in 1874. "My" Robert's father Hugh, was a soldier who was discharged to pension because of tuberculosis and didn't live long after his discharge. I have no record of Hugh being a farmer as such. My problem is that while I think the Robert in Liverpool is probably the brother of my Great Great Grandfather, Thomas, I currently don't have enough evidence to say "Yes! It's him!" Does anyone have any knowledge of a Robert Armstrong born ca. 1834 in Ireland and later living in Liverpool which may provide further clarification of this question? Regards David Armstrong Maylands Western Australia
I am searching for a place of residence and more information about William GUNNING, son of James Gunning (both gardeners?). He married Mary BROWN 1877 in St. Alban's, Liverpool. She emigrated to USA in 1880 but I can find no record that he accompanied her, and cannot find him in the 1881 census. He's not in the death indexes, either. So, I am hoping someone with access to the Liverpool directories for the 1875-1885 or so years might find him or his father. Also, is there a James BROWN, tailor? I really appreciate any help anyone can give me. Christine Draisey, Iowa, USA
Hi Ted You won't need to send for the marriage certificate if someone visits the Register Office & obtains the church record for you - the details will be the same. Southport charge for looking and Liverpool dont, but they take ages to look, and you cant contact them by email, because all you get is a basic email reply. my pension doesnt stretch to paying for just looking, I dont mind paying for the certificate, but thats it, and im not a mean devil its just it becomes an expensive business as you know buying certs. Hello Listers I am after knowledge of THOMAS GATTER born in Farringdon, Devon in about 1828. Also he had a son JOSEPH GATTER born in Farringdon, Devon in about 1863. After this it looks as if the name changed to JOSEPH GATER. JOSEPH married MARY and had (amongst others) EDGAR R GATER. EDGAR GATER married (second time around) JESSIE FLORENCE JONES (nee DENCH); They went on to have 4 children: HANNAH E, EDITH W, LORNA and EDWIN N GATER. I believe that I know their marriages, but am not entirely sure. I believe that HANNAH married a GEORGE WALSH and went to Australia where they both died in the same month. It is very strongly believed that they all, at a later date, moved north to Liverpool. This would have been after 1934 as this is when their mother JESSIE died in 1934 and Edgar Gater remarried in 1936. I would be very pleased to hear from anyone who may know more about the GATER family to help me in my search for more information. Thank you very much for spending the time to read my email. Ann Sherman (nee Dench)
