    3. Thanks Julie. It must be her. I can't image any other girls with the name Mary Fletcher being born in Runcorn in 1847. I think that when you say you see a Mary F Lewis in Poulton cum Seacombe in 1881 you mean 1901. In the 1901 I see Mary Fletcher Lewis, age 53, widow, living at 10 Dundee Grove, Poulton cum Seacombe. She appears to be living in her sons house. He is Harry Lewis, age 29, ship's chief officer. I see Mary F Lewis and children Harry, Mabel and Mary but not Sarah at 7 Garden Lane Everton in 1881. I have also now found her in the 1911 at Peterborough. Will now look in the 1871 and 1891. I have been trying to find her for years. This busy for a while! 3. G'day Merv and others I've recently been having some work undertaken for me at the PRO, and I thought I'd give people a heads up. First, having a member of the family whose occupation taken from BDM certificates etc is in the Customs can be problematic. I have one such family member. William Jeffries worked FOR the Customs but was not IN the Customs. Rather in reality he was a "Scale Porter" for the Customs. In other words he was a labourer employed by the Customs to do the physical work of weighing cargoes so that Duty could be calculated by the Customs Officer. It is the latter whose records are in the archives. Secondly, a good record agent will be able to do the necessary searches at the TNA in about three hours. Mine charges £25 per hour < http://www.searcher-na.co.uk/ > However, the research I'm undertaking at the moment isn't amenable to such an approach. I'm researching an English family member who was stranded in France during WWII, and who was arrested by the Germans, as a result when MI5 were interrogating Gestapo member post-war, she's mentioned in a number of files, from which extracts were taken and copied into her own MI5 file in an abbreviated form. To ask my record to search the files and locate the references would cost me a great deal of money. Instead, I'm having the necessary files copied and sent to me so that I can spend the hours searching them. (One I received on Friday has my relative's name blanked out in a report written by an MI5 Officer recounting his field trip to Germany in 1946, but knowing the context and the other characters named in the report, I know exactly who he's talking about, whereas a record agent would more than likely miss the reference). I asked the TNA recently to provide a quote to copy one file in pdf format, and they came back with a price of £403 or £2.80 per page. My record agent digitally photographed (jpg) the file along with two others for £75 in total. He then put the resulting 1.6 Gigabytes of photographs on a commercial file sharing site for me to download. It's a more cumbersome method, but far more economic. Food for thought? 3. Hi Sally Many thanks for your reply I have search Lancashire for a Richard Rossiter son of Richard Rossiter and have found a Richard Rossiter who married Jane Coppell in 1785 at Chidwall. Our Richard jr was born 1789 making him about 10 years older than our Bryan Rossiter. Unfortunately I can't find a connection between Richard and Bryan Bryan became an excise officer in Liverpool in 1824 and died on the job in 1853. Would you know if there would be any employment records available? I contacted [email protected] for help and they were unsuccessful. 3. Sorry, Merv, but the links I'd sent don't appear to work :o( This is the website I used - http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/ The best way to search for the Rossiter information is to go to Search By Location and then click on the county of Lancashire on the map. You will see on the list the Gore's Directories, so click on whichever one you want to search, and then when the first page of the book appears, enter the surname into the search box above it and hit return. You will then be able to click the "next hit" option to take you to each match it finds within the pages for that year. This is a great free site that has a selection of directories from all over England and Wales and for a wide range of years. I recommend it to all of the listers :o) Regards, Sally

    3. Hi Merv, I have spent some time this morning having a look at the information on the Rossiters. Richard Rossiter and Jane Coppell look to be a good match for the parents of Bryan from the details that I saw on the Lancs OPC website, compared with directory entries for Liverpool in the mid 1820s. Richard's occupation for the births of his children is shown as Hatter or Hatmaker. In the 1824 Gore's Directory entry, Bryan, Richard Snr and Richard Jr are all living at 2 Westmoreland Place, Liverpool with Richard Snr's occupation being that of Gentleman. I searched around for the 1825 Gore's Directory, and found them all at 2 Westmoreland Place still, but this time Richard Snr's occupation is shown as that of a Hatter,Bryan is shown as an Excise Officer, and Richard jr works in Customs: http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/d.asp The 1827 directory shows Richard Rossiter (and I'm assuming this is Snr) on his own at 1 Westmoreland Place, and again his occupation has reverted to Gentleman. If you google the name of "Richard Rossiter" and "Hatter" or "Hatmaker" there are a few entries from the Bankrupcy pages of the London Gazette in the 1790s, where he is described as a Hatter, Dealer and Chapman which would go some way to explaining that as a business man - even as a sometime failed one - he might have been able to accrue enough money to describe himself as a Gentleman. The following links I'm assuming to be Richard Jr in 1825 and 1829: http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/d.asp http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/d.asp Given that one of Bryan and Ann's daughters, and possibly their first child, is called Jane, I would imagine that is a nod to Jane Coppell being Bryan's mother. It's not quite the confirmation you were looking for, but if this was my family tree, I'd be happy to add the details in with a reasonable degree of certainty while I waited for updates to be added onto the Lancs OPC website :o) Regards, Sally

    3. Hi John sorry to bother you, but seeing that you found a baptism in Walton hospital, I am enquring to see if you can get me a birth record of sefton Hospital, Liverpool or how I can get one, as I have now found out that I was born with a different surname as the one I got now. My mum was already married to her first husband when I was born, but on the GRo I was name Phillips but my birth certificate says Barlow, I need to clarify this, if you can not help me, do you know who can sandy -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of John Hardy Sent: 15 June 2012 07:52 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [ENG-LIV] Fw: Walton Hospital Chapel John, >From the Baptism Register, entry 1201.
