Hello, Missing Lincs, Here's a little taste of history for you (particularly if you were affected by the "Bedroom tax"): In 1696 England and Wales adopted a "Window tax". To avoid the tax some houses from the period can be seen to have bricked-up window-spaces. The tax was repealed 156 years later (1851). Also interesting to note (according to Wikipedia): France (established 1798, repealed 1926) Income tax was not introduced in England until 1842. So, go ahead and put that new window or skylight in.
