1. Write on the blackboard 1,000 times "It is 2012". This is to prepare you for writing a cheque or any other date-bearing document. 2. Get out the 400 diskettes and backup your computer hard drive. (I gave up this technique when I got to over 40 diskettes for the backup.) 3. Buy that Solid State Disk (SSD) for your computer and ask the 14-year-old down the road to install it. You computer will be much faster. The Internet, alas, will still move like molasses. 4. January theme for list members: We are going to help you find lost souls in the census. Here is my disappearance. I know quite a lot about him until 1846 & he then vanishes. Cyprian Dalton is clearly quite a scoundrel- and he's my great great great uncle - born 1804 in Friskney. Married 1827 to Mary Ann Brocklesbury. 1834-6 abandons family & is denounced in parish records. I haven't been able to find him in 1841 census- though I found his wife & 3 children in the Spilsby workhouse. Jan 1843 sentenced to 7 years transportation for stealing turkeys. Freed Nov 1846. He then disappears, not in any census, as far as I can see, under that name. Can anyone find him either in 1841, or after 1846? Margaret 4. Hello from NZ I will probably be able to send one a day!! The first is 1841, yes I know, terrible!! Thomas ROYCE b c 1823 Sewstern Leics but in 1841 his family were living in Gunby St Nicholas. Father Francis was a farmer (b c 1796 also in Sewstern), was stepmother Cath*rine with father in any census? I know that's two but today is Jan 2 in NZ Thanks Mike Kawerau 3127 NZ casofilia@xtra.co.nz
Margaret from Toronto has been very kind trying to help with the request below. While not in Lincs she suggested that I ask if anyone has knowledge of deaths in Coston Leics (Just across the county boundary, 4m from Gunby).. I am interested to find out if Cath*rine ROYCE and son, George, died there between 1835 and the start of registration in 1837. Neither seem to appear in the census nor in FreeBMD deaths Thanks again Mike ======== Hello from NZ I will probably be able to send one a day!! The first is 1841, yes I know, terrible!! A query from N.Z. JACKSON, William - in 1841 Census- age 34 with wife Mary- age 33 & family 5 children residing Westhorpe in Parish of Gosberton. 1851 - Wife Mary- age 42 in Spalding Workhouse with 6 children - (3 older children were clearly old enough to be 'out on their own). NO SIGN of William, her husband though. WHERE is he? 1861 - William reappears - age 53 (so was born c1807/1808) and was from Thurlby. With wife Mary and 3 children plus a granddaughter they were living at Donington Parish of Quadring. Question: Where was William in 1851???? (note he appears to have died by the time of 1871 census) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------ 4. I don't know if this could be your William in 1851, but there is one living in the Spilsby workhouse that might fit the bill??? The occupation is hard to read so knowing what he did in 1861 might be a help. I have a 'lost' ancestor by the name George William Rylatt. His ancestors came from Anwick in the early 1700's, and his family line eventually returned to Lincs, in Hemingby and Lincoln, where I grew up and married. He was bpt. 28 Nov 1849 at St. Martins Church, Birmingham. Abt.1889 he deserted his wife, Marrian nee Winchurst for another woman. At that time he also took with him his sons John Francis and Joseph Harold. Family story is that he sired many more children with this woman. George William Rylatt died 19 Aug 1911. I would like to know who was the mystery woman he ran off with, were there children he sired with her and what became of his sons John Francis and Joseph Harold? Thanks in advance, John. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Louis Mills" <louis_mills@att.net> To: "Eng Lincsgen" <eng-lincsgen-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 01, 2012 6:33 PM Subject: [LIN] Admin. note: January ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ENG-LINCSGEN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Another one from NZ!! Thank you to Margaret for clearing up the ROYCE deaths I asked about. Now another of the ROYCE clan, Mary Ann's maiden name. This may be stretching Lincs a bit much, well just over the county line. In 1841 Sarah DOUBLEDAY is living in North Witham with her uncle, John DOUBLEDAY as she did for the next two censuses. I am looking for her mother in 1841, Mary Ann DOUBLEDAY. She was born c1805 in Buckminster. Sarah's father died in Sep Q 1840 and that was registered in "Grantham" so mother could be in Lincs or Leics. She remarried in 1844 in "Melton Mowbray". Thanks Mike Kawerau 3127 casofilia@xtra.co.nz
Re the backing up - an alternative to the 400 diskettes is to be willing to pay a relatively small monthly fee to have our computer automatically backed up on-line, where it is saved at at least one, often more, secure sites. After all, if you have a house fire - or other tragedy - both the computer and the diskettes will probably be gone. Off-site back-up is, for me, well worth the fee for the peace of mind I get, not even having to think about it. Happy hunting!
