Hi Nivard, I can't answer the question as to why there are no parents listed (unless it's because it's non-conformist) but if you enter batch number C047701 into the new Familysearch site most of the entries prior to about 1750 don't have the parents' names given, so it wasn't just your entry. (I hasten to add that I didn't do a scientific check on the entries, just hit random-numbered pages and scrolled down to check the dates and how much information was given. <g>) Pam Proud to be a member of Lincolnshire Family History Society http://www.lincolnshirefhs.org.uk/ On 10/01/2012 22:01, Nivard Ovington wrote: > Dear all > > Just checking a few long standing ones I have stuck on in the past to see if anything had come up > recently > > One being Joseph ROSE born circa 1750 (married Mary HOWIT 1777 Spalding) > > On checking familysearch I found :- > > Joseph Rose > England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 > birth: 19 Nov 1749 > christening: 25 Nov 1749 PRESBYTERIAN-?NC,?GAINSBOROUGH,?LINCOLN,?ENGLAND > residence: 1749 Lincoln,? Thanks Pam I am just curious now as its such an unusual entry, I can't recall seeing one like it It would be interesting to find there is yet another link back to Scotland perhaps Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi Nivard, > I can't answer the question as to why there are no parents listed > (unless it's because it's non-conformist) but if you enter batch number > C047701 into the new Familysearch site most of the entries prior to > about 1750 don't have the parents' names given, so it wasn't just your > entry. > (I hasten to add that I didn't do a scientific check on the entries, > just hit random-numbered pages and scrolled down to check the dates and > how much information was given. <g>) > > Pam > Proud to be a member of Lincolnshire Family History Society > http://www.lincolnshirefhs.org.uk/
I have seen a parish register at least once with just the date and name of the baptised child, no parents, no other data. And I've been told that there are a few with the just the month and year at the top of the page and a list of names, (no other dates or data), I don't know if we can accuse the vicar of laziness, lack of training or what. I do know that baptism records were a kind of legal document for nobility to prove lineage, but one of the reasons for Civil Registration was to make the process and documentation uniform and complete. Cromwell introduced the concept, but it didn't get formalized again until the 1830s. Or, it could just be a giant conspiracy to prevent us from knowing who our ancestors really are. Yah think? I don't know whether the following has any bearing on the Joseph Rose discussion but .. In a village in Nottinghamshire, at about the same time, a boy child was christened - no parents were named. Nobody else in the village had that surname. I believe that this child was brought up in the village by a fairly well off family. He was known to have been a life long friend of the son of that family and was eventually an executor of this friend. Approximately 16 years later, in an adjoining village, a very wealthy man left in his Will a large settlement to a young man whom he named and gave his approximate age. The name of the young man was the same as the child that had been baptised. One presumes that this was an acknowledgement of fatherhood although the child did not bear his surname. Some fuel for thought?
