    3. Put an apostrophe in front of BALLANCE - the apostrophe will not be visible when you leave the cell. I am typing marriages into Excel, and have the surname BALLANCE. Every time I enter the name it changes it to "BALANCE". How do I get it to stay as I have put it? I have already changed the format to "Text". 2. That is one way of doing it. I used to do that all the time when I was working. If memory serves me right doing that moves the word to the right of the cell. Meaning if Ann wanted the name in the centre it won't work. Like I said this was from memory and I haven't done this for about 10 years Victor Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device -----Original Message----- From: "Ward Family Tree" <WardFamilyTree@btinternet.com> Sender: eng-lincsgen-bounces@rootsweb.com Date: Sat, 24 Mar 2012 12:38:02 To: <eng-lincsgen@rootsweb.com> Reply-To: eng-lincsgen@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [LIN] Problem Put an apostrophe in front of BALLANCE - the apostrophe will not be visible when you leave the cell. 3. This method is really for entering numerals into a cell as text and automatically moves the contents to the left of the cell - the text/numbers or whatever can be centred and it can also be sorted without interfering with normal sorting rules (I tested it before offering as a possible solution). The advantage of this method is that it can applied to a single cell or to a range of cells only and is not applied to the whole spreadsheet when it may be advantageous to retain auto text functionality. 3. MGC: Putting the apostrophe in only works with numbers. This is not the shortest method, but at least it does work, and you don't have to change any other settings !!! Do exactly the following: In Excel, type BALLANCE Do not press enter yet. Your cursor is flashing at the end of the word BALLANCE. Press shift and Home keys together to highlight the word BALLANCE. Press control key and C key together as though you are to copy the letters BALLANCE. Now just press the enter key. Cheers - SKM. ====================== -----Original Message----- From: Ward Family Tree Sent: Saturday, March 24, 2012 2:38 PM To: eng-lincsgen@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [LIN] Problem Put an apostrophe in front of BALLANCE - the apostrophe will not be visible when you leave the cell.
