Thanks for that Joan, just one small problem:  I don't know when they were married, I have searched all the sites I can think of and can't find it.  I can't find them on a census either. Try FreeBMD. There they are on Lincoln 7a page 930 in the June quarter of 1894. You can order the certificate online from the GRO. Cost is about £9.00 as I recall. Good luck. Without wishing to throw cold water on Joan's find, there is no proof that William and Rebecca married. That FreeBMD entry proves only that they were on the same page of the register. I've been trying to 'match' the other people on the page. Though with very little success, unless you count the following: I have found in 1851 a Rebecca Kime, aged 21, born what I presume is Scamblesby (terrible writing!) , living in Horncastle, HO107/2107 f 297 p 34 Also living in Horncastle in Foundry Street, is an Edward S Kirkby, aged 20, living with his parents John and Hannah. HO107/2107 f 363 p 8 In 1861 living in Foundry Street, Horncastle, there is a Rebecca Kirkby, aged 29, widow, born Scramby (sic), with three children, John, Hannah, and Edward. RG 9/2366 f 82 p//53 There is a burial in Horncastle St Mary 19 March 1859 for an Edward Kirkby, no age given. Not having a lot of luck finding any of them in 1871, apart from Edward (junior) who is in Horncastle workhouse. This can't be right, I suspect that William was born about 1848 and Mary Jane would have been born after 23 years of marriage, whilst that's not unknown, it's unlikely. Judging by Mary Jane's age and place of birth in the 1891 census her birth registration seems to be March quarter 1875, Caistor registration district. The birth certificate should give you Rebecca's maiden name. Phil, I looked at the 1901 census and found: Living in Lincoln George Gresham age 47 Born in New Holland wife Mary age 26 born Grimsby and children: Daisy age 4 Thomas age 2 Ruby age 3 months Children all born Lincoln I also looked on the following census: George and 4 children(same 3 from 1901 plus Robert age 4) living again in Lincoln but with no Mary. Could this be the right family??
