Hi John I have tried to read the census image showing Ann Rylat it appears to be something like 'Rail backed labourer's wife'. I am not sure about the second word You mention Eliz relation with John Dawson. From the link Pam provided it was Charles Haw who was sued for maintenance at Boston Petty Sessions. I wonder where John Dawson came in. I have found a John Rylott in the 1851 census but he is listed as a boarder and unmarried so he can't be the right John. Victor & Susan, I too tried Susan's suggestion of "negativising" the image and I also got "Rail Road Labourer's Wife" I must have had a senior's moment regarding the bastardy reference as I searched for Eliza rather than Ann hence I got John DAWSON! Ann's mother in law, and sister in law were also called Eliza(beth). Regarding John, if he was boarding the landlord might have been giving the info to the enumerator and though that JR was single.
