The 1851 census clearly shows an Eliza Smith, aged 5, born Gosberton, listed as the daughter of Ann RYLAT. HO107/2096 folio 252 page 24 Also in the family, living in Surfleet is William RYLAT, son, aged 1, born Surfleet. So Ann definitely had a child out of wedlock. What will be more difficult to prove is that Eliza is John's daughter, though it seems unlikely that she is. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LIN/bastardy_1846.html Scroll down to the entries for the 24 April. Pam, Thanks for your findings about Ann SMITH RYLAT. (I had overlooked searching for the variants of RYLOTT.) Ann's relationship with John Dawson and the birth of "Eliz." Perhaps did not worry John in 1849/51, but where was John on census night 1851? Ann is shown as "head" on census page and has a lengthy occupation (ending in "wife" - the first words are not readable by me [yet]). I will have to see if I can find him out of county.
