The border crossing card dates 1915. He was married in Canada. I may have his date of birth wrong. When I double checked the 1881 Canadian census he was 35 years old so that would put his date of birth 1846. The marriage cert. lists his parents as Charles and Maria Gossling. The only problem with the cert. is that his wife's name is Jane Traviss. I am not sure I have the right couple. This couple were not very careful with the spelling of names. Jane was an Irish Catholic. When she married James Gossling her family was not happy. As a matter of fact when her brother's found out she was marrying a protestant the beat the heck out of James. That may account her spelling her name differently. Her sister was in charge of her headstone when she died. For the headstone she used the name Travis. Another document I found in my collection was a list of Pinchbeck marriages. It lists a William Gossling marrying a Milicent Kirk 24 April 1807 and a William Gossling marrying a Jane Gall 2 March 1773. Hi All Could someone be so kind as to look at the burial of Hugh Blanchard in 1793 in Beelsby, I think he was buried on the 19th of August but can't decipher/decide if he was 54 or 84 and help reading this would be appreciated. http://www.lincstothepast.com/General-register/520413.record?ImageId=46046&pt=T Thanks Maria --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! On the basis that 5's seem to be written quite clearly with a definite 'line' across the top, I would say 84. Hi again Yes it does help to give the right year <g> From what I can see he is more likely to be born 1844 Given the location I would say you have the right marriage Do the births in Canada not give the mothers maiden name? The difference in surname is probably because she didn't know how to spell it herself, plus the clerk writing it may not have even asked Likewise GOSLING / GOSSLING Fixed spelling of surnames is a relatively modern thing, likewise keep an open mind re ages which can often vary, particularly I find when the bride is older than the groom The marriage being a transcript itself could also be prone to error, was she 28 and the transcriber read 24 for example Marriage James GOSSLING 25 King Ont born England bachelor labourer Parents Charles & Maria GOSSLING Jane TRAVISS 24 King Ont born Ireland spinster parents Francis & Ann TRAVISS witnesses Robert MCLINCHY & Mary CARNEY King date 4th March 1870 King religion of groom episcopalian religion of bride episcopalian By Rev Thomas ARGUE by licence Division King County York =============== 1871 Township of King, North York GOSLING James 27 born England labourer GOSLING Jane 29 born Ireland could not read or write GOSLING Anna M 4 months Canada =============== 1881 Vespra? Simcoe North Ontario GOSLING James 35 born England C of E farmer GOSLING Jane 36 born Ireland C of E GOSLING Annie 9 born Canada C of E GOSLING Sarah E 7 " " " GOSLING Isabelle 6 " " " GOSLING John Wm 4 " " " GOSLING Louisa 1 " " " =============== 1911 Barrie Simcoe South Ontario (with John & Lucy GOSSLING and family) GOSSLING James father Widower labourer in Coopers Shop born November 1844 England year of Imigration 1860 =============== 1915 Border Crossing GOSSLING James 71 widower Cooper born England last residence Barrie destination Buffalo New York =============== All of which does not help with his parentage as there are none that match, that is of course assuming he gave the right parents names and the clerk recorded them correctly Could his parents have emigrated with James? I would suggest checking the Parish records for Pinchbeck, not only baptisms but all events, marriages from say 1841 and also burials, if he was an only child, the reason may have been his mother and perhaps fathers early death You can search the PRs yourself online at http://www.lincstothepast.com/ Select advanced search and enter Pinchbeck PAR1 in the first box and 1844 in the second which should get you to the baptisms I am sure you will be able to find the others with a little experimentation These are images of the parish registers, you need to browse one page at a time Keep in mind the spellings ie note all that are similar to GOSLING I would also keep an eye open for any parentage of Charles & Maria, or any James born to a single mother There is certainly a GOS(S)LING presence in Pinchbeck in the period just not yours in the few pages I checked When you say another document in your collection, do you mean you have a proven link to those marriages, or have just noted them in case they were Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 22/02/2014 14:36, Ron Wingrove wrote: > The border crossing card dates 1915. > > He was married in Canada. > > I may have his date of birth wrong.
