Bill & Ann, The information you have found matches my own findings. The only thing that I can think of to substantiate my SA'n cousin is that in the 1881 census the "1" on the form (supposedly meaning age at LAST birthday should have been 1 MONTH. In the 1891 census he is recorded as 11 years old by his uncle who was head of the house he was living at on census night. I have asked my cousin to substantiate what she believes. I wonder if the south African researchers can throw up any SA'n records that prove/disprove my findings? Thanks for the assistance. Peter Holmes Western Australia.
