I have a copy of a page from a book which reads: Plate 8: Johnson's sketch of St. Mary's Street, showing occupants in 1784. I have some questions which I hope someone will be able to answer. First, what is the book in which this page can be found? Second, are there any other sketches in the book showing occupants of other parts/streets of Stamford? I am trying to compile a list of occupants, would be grateful if someone can direct me to any other sources of information for names of people living in Stamford between about 1776 and 1793? ... and which Johnson drew the sketch? Jane I can't give a full answer to your questions, but you may be able to get one (directly or indirectly) from the Stamford Survey group: http://www.stamfordhistory.org.uk/contact There are a number of books dealing with the history of Stamford, some of which include details of traders in the town, e.g. "Stamford Pubs and Breweries" and "Stamford Then and Now" by Martin Smith.  The Town Hall holds historical registers of electors (these are not online, as far as I know), which are likely to cover this period, and there may be some relevant trade directories available online.  Also, the National Newspaper Archive may well have some contemporary copies of the Stamford Mercury online, which could be browsed for this kind of information; and there is always http://www.lincstothepast.com/  and http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ which may throw up something useful from a judicious search. Two of my direct ancestors started trading in St Mary's Street in the mid-1790s, but that is just a bit too late for this particular exercise...  If you discover where this page came from, I would be very interested to hear about it myself.
