Good morning Barrowby-Stainwith is/are villages at the border between Lincs and Leicestershire, I wonder if anyone is familiar with the court system in the early 20th century in that part of the country. I am interested in researching a possible case of child neglect which I believe occurred in the period 1908-1918. What level of court would have heard this? Would it have been in Leics or Lincs? Any advice would be appreciated. Regards Garth
Your best bet is to start with newspapers as a case like this is likely to have been of interest and will have been reported. It may have been held at Petty Sessions, which were held much more regularly, and were more locally based, than Quarter Sessions. You should also consider that the Guardians of the Poor Law Unions were very probably involved and the case may have been mentioned in the Minutes of their fortnightly or weekly meetings. I have seen many such cases mentioned in the minutes that we have transcribed (before 1901). Barrowby is in the Grantham Poor Law Union and Lincolnshire Archives does have minutes that cover this period. You really need a firm date though before going down that road.
